Abstract: Methods and systems for suppressing coking in dehydration reactions catalyzed by solid acids. Dehydration reactions catalyzed by one or more solid acid catalysts can be performed in the presence of a super critical carbon dioxide medium which prevents or minimizes coking of the solid acid catalysts. Methods and systems are provided for producing glycerol products, such as acrolein, acrylic acid, acetol, by performing a dehydration reaction of glycerol using one or more solid acid catalysts in the presence of a super critical carbon dioxide reaction medium. Such methods and systems can be nm for extended periods of time, or continuously, due to catalyst regeneration and/or recycling. Such methods and systems are configured to produce glycerol products from crude glycerol feedstock with minimal pretreatment.

Abstract: A three-phase current source rectifier (CSR) with three AC inputs may include a controller, a free-wheeling diode with a cathode connected to a positive line and an anode connected to a negative line, three pairs of switches connected in parallel between the positive line and the negative line, and six pairs of diodes, each pair of the diodes connected in series. Each two pairs of the diodes may be connected in parallel with each other and in series with a respective pair of switches. Each AC input may be connected to between each of two pairs of the diodes.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for constructing one of a neuroscience-inspired artificial neural network and a neural network array comprises one of a neuroscience-inspired dynamic architecture, a dynamic artificial neural network array and a neural network array of electrodes associated with neural tissue such as a brain, the method and apparatus having a special purpose display processor. The special purpose display processor outputs a display over a period of selected reference time units to demonstrate a neural pathway from, for example, one or a plurality of input neurons through intermediate destination neurons to an output neuron in three dimensional space. The displayed neural network may comprise neurons and synapses in different colors and may be utilized, for example, to show the behavior of a neural network for classifying hand-written digits between values of 0 and 9 or recognizing vertical/horizontal lines in a grid image of lines.

Abstract: A comprehensive process for treating lignocellulosic biomass in order to separate the biomass into its component parts, the process comprising: a) contacting the lignocellulosic biomass with a first solvent for a period of time and at a first temperature at a severity in the range of about 2 to about 4 to remove extractive components and a portion of ash from the biomass; b) contacting the biomass from step (a) with a second solvent, and optional catalyst, at a second temperature at a severity in the range of about 1 to 5 to remove hemicelluloses and additional ash from the biomass; and c) separating the biomass from step (b) into a lignin product and a cellulose product by contacting the biomass from step (b) with a third solvent at a severity in the range of about 1.5 to 5 to provide a spent liquor product and a solid fraction containing cellulose.

Abstract: Systems and methods for detecting a tampering and identifying a location of a digital recording are provided. A frequency sequence and a phase angle sequence may be extracted from the digital recording. A portion of the frequency sequence may be matched to one of a plurality of reference frequency sequences, and a portion of the phase angle sequence may be matched to one of a plurality of reference phase angle sequences. Tampering of the digital recording may be detected when the frequency and phase sequences differ from the matched reference sequences. Moreover, a noise sequence may be extracted from the extracted frequency sequence. A location of the digital recording may be identified by matching the noise sequence to one of a plurality of noise sequences of the plurality of reference frequency sequences.

Abstract: Metal halide scintillators are described. More particularly, the scintillators include doped (e.g., europium-doped) ternary metal halides, such as those of the formulas A2BX4 and AB2X5, wherein A is an alkali metal, such as Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs or any combination thereof; B is an alkali earth metal, such as Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba or any combination thereof; and X is a halide, such as Cl, Br, I, F or any combination thereof. Radiation detectors comprising the novel metal halide scintillators and other ternary metal halides, such as those of the formulas A2EuX4 and AEu2X5, wherein A is an alkali metal and X is a halide, are also described.
