Abstract: The disclosure relates 10 a device which is used to adjust the valve stroke of internal combustion engines and has an actuation element for the valve stem. The actuation element is actuated by the camshaft and has a receiving space for a pressure medium. The receiving space is fluidically connected to a reservoir space of an adjustment reservoir. The volume of the reservoir space can be adjusted by means of a reservoir piston. The reservoir piston is loaded toward the reservoir space with a force that is greater than the force applied by the pressure medium and that is less than the restoring force acting on the piston.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for an engine including cams having different lobe profiles. In one example, cams of a first cam group drive a plurality of deactivatable cylinder valves and cams of a second cam group drive a plurality of non-deactivatable cylinder valves. The cams of the first cam group include a different lobe profile relative to cams of the second cam group.

Abstract: Aspects of the present disclosure are directed to an internal combustion engine having a valve actuation device and at least one first exhaust valve and one second exhaust valve per cylinder. The first and second exhaust valves may be actuated together in at least one operating area of the internal combustion engine, via an exhaust valve bridge and a first valve lifter, by a first cam lobe of a first exhaust cam arranged on a camshaft. The camshaft having a second exhaust cam with at least one additional cam lobe and at least one second cam lobe A transmission device being arranged in the functional path between the second exhaust cam and the second exhaust valve, the transmission device allowing an idle stroke to be activated or deactivated. The first exhaust cam and the second exhaust cam are configured and arranged to be rotatable relative to one another.

Abstract: A rocker arm assembly includes an outer arm having first and second low lift lobe contacting surfaces, an inner arm, and a latch assembly. The inner arm includes first and second opposed sidewalls extending between a first end and a second end, and a high lift lobe contacting surface disposed between the first and second opposed sidewalls. The first end is pivotably secured to the outer arm and operably associated with an engine valve, and the second end is operably associated with a lash adjuster and defining a latch bore. The latch assembly is movable between a first configuration and a second configuration. In the first configuration, the latch assembly engages the outer arm such that the outer arm rotates with the inner arm, and in the second configuration, the latch assembly disengages the outer arm such that the outer arm rotates independently from the inner arm.

Abstract: Internal combustion engines that use the pumping motion of the engine pistons to supercharge the cylinder with air/charge are disclosed. The pistons may include a skirt with a field of pockets that provide a ringless, non-lubricated, seal equivalent. The piston heads may be domed with one or more depressions to facilitate the movement of air/charge in the cylinder. The engines also may have non-circular, preferably rectangular, cross-section pistons and cylinders. The engines also may use multi-stage poppet valves in lieu of conventional poppet valves, and may include a split crankshaft. The engines also may operate in an inverted orientation in which the piston is closer to the local gravitationally dominant terrestrial body's center of gravity at top dead center position than at bottom dead center position.

Abstract: A method of controlling an operation of an inlet valve system arranged in connection with each cylinder of an internal combustion piston engine, includes monitoring at least one parameter relating to engine load conditions, controlling using a primary control procedure an opening and closing timing of an inlet valve in response to the at least one parameter, and feeding charge air into the cylinder when the inlet valve is open. In a secondary control procedure a parameter relating to engine load conditions is measured and the closing timing of the inlet valve of the inlet valve system is controlled in response to the at least parameter independently from and with higher priority than the primary control procedure.
