Abstract: An oil-containing hydraulic lifter for lash adjustment comprising relatively movable cylinder and plunger members defining a pressure chamber between their closed ends and a reservoir chamber within the plunger. Means are provided for rapid, one-way flow of the oil from the reservoir to the pressure chamber during outward movement of the plunger and for slow, one-way flow from the pressure to the reservoir chamber during inward movement of the plunger. A flexible, bag-shaped diaphragm extending into the reservoir chamber has its open, upper end sealed liquid tightly to the inner wall of the reservoir for sealing in the oil while expanding and collapsing with reciprocation of the plunger. The reservoir chamber has an increased diameter at that part where the diaphragm undergoes most of its expansion and collapse, thereby spacing the inner wall of the reservoir chamber from the diaphragm by a distance great enough to allow full expansion of the diaphragm in the expanding and collapsing operation thereof. The effect is to greatly increase the volumetric change exhibited by the oil within the reservoir chamber during the reciprocation of the plunger, thereby enhancing lash adjusting performance.

Abstract: A hydraulic valve lift device for transmitting the motion of a cam to a push rod of an intake or exhaust valve of an engine, including a housing, a lifter slidably engaged by the housing and provided therein with an oil pressure chamber adapted to receive an oil, and a plunger provided with a flange portion and slidable in relation to the lifter. The flange portion of the plunger and cylindrical bore of the housing cooperate with each other to define therebetween a braking chamber into which oil is introduced. The device has a slit through which the oil in the braking chamber is relieved to the outside. The arrangement is such that the rate of oil relieved through the braking chamber is reduced as the plunger is lowered. The device further includes a relief valve for maintaining the pressure in the braking chamber below a predetermined pressure level.

Abstract: Drive is transmitted from a cam to a push rod via a body of liquid trapped between two pistons. A control element is normally urged against a seat by pressure in the body of liquid but can be lifted off its seat by the application of pressure to liquid in a control chamber. When the control element moves clear of its seat, liquid trapped between the pistons acts on a seat-engaging face of the control element and displaces the control element instead of driving the push rod.

Abstract: A hydraulic tappet or lash adjuster of simplified design is disclosed for use in the valve train of an internal combustion engine equipped with dual ramp cams. In one embodiment, the disclosed tappet is designed to respond to the presence or absence of control pressure supplied through a single supply port to cause variation in the timed relationship of valve opening and piston movement whereby the internal combustion engine may be operated in a power mode or a braking mode. In another embodiment, a pressure relief outlet is provided in the tappet for cooperation with a pressure relief port to insure collapse of the tappet thereby to prevent the valve from being opened beyond a pre-determined fully open position.

Abstract: A hydraulic tappet is so constructed that the socket for the hollow pushrod is of two diameters, the lower portion being of smaller diameter and thereby providing a clearance space of increased radial width and bounding an intermediate reservoir space with the body wall between the larger oil entry reservoir and the radially narrower clearance space about the upper part of the socket of larger diameter. The clearance space about the upper part of the socket immediately above the lower part of reduced diameter leads to a collecting groove, the axial height of such clearance varying throughout the cycle. The central bore of the socket leading from the pushrod seat extends a considerable distance below the transverse bore leading from the collecting groove to provide an oil reservoir which supplies the hollow pushrod immediately upon start of the engine. The central bore stops short of the bottom of the socket, and the tappet is devoid of a disc valve at said socket bottom.
