Abstract: A valve actuation system comprises a valve actuation motion source configured to provide a main valve actuation motion and an auxiliary valve actuation motion for actuating at least one engine valve via a valve actuation load path. A lost motion subtracting mechanism is arranged in a pre-rocker arm valve train component and configured, in a first default operating state, to convey at least the main valve actuation motion and configured, in a first activated state, to lose the main valve actuation motion and the auxiliary valve actuation motion. Additionally, a lost motion adding mechanism is arranged in a valve bridge and configured, in a second default operating state, to lose the auxiliary valve actuation motion and configured, in a second activated state, to convey the auxiliary valve actuation motion, wherein the lost motion adding mechanism is in series with the lost motion subtracting mechanism in the valve actuation load path.

Abstract: An engine valve lifter assembly comprises a lifter body, a plunger assembly, and a spring. The lifter body comprises an oil control portion comprising an exterior surface, oil ports, and an interior oil chamber. A plunger interface end comprises an interior plunger chamber and a second spring seat. Selectively reciprocating plunger assembly comprises a piston end coupled to reciprocate in the oil chamber and a cam input end comprising a spring seat. A spring is biased between the spring seat and the second spring seat. The spring is configured to push the cam input end away from the plunger chamber. A sleeve is coupled around the oil control portion of the lifter body, and the sleeve is slidable between a lower position and an upper position to selectively block and unblock the oil ports.

Abstract: An actuating system of an engine valve comprises a movable member, for example, in the form of a master piston controlled by a cam of a camshaft. A slave piston is hydraulically controlled by the master piston by means of a volume of pressurized fluid, to open said engine valve against the action of a return spring. The system also comprises an auxiliary device for applying an additional force to the engine valve to keep the engine valve in a closed position. The auxiliary device is configured or controlled in such a way that the total force tending to keep the engine valve in its closed position varies during each rotation cycle of the cam. The total force is higher at least in one part of the rotation cycle of the cam wherein the engine valve must remain in its closed position, and is, instead, reduced at least in one part of the rotation cycle of the cam wherein the engine valve is not in its closed position.

Abstract: In a tappet with a built-in lash adjuster, hydraulic oil is prevented from leaking from a low pressure chamber during a long-period stop.A tappet (10) includes a hydraulic lash adjuster (11) which supports a lower end portion of a push rod (96) and a tappet case (12) to which the lash adjuster (11) is internally fitted and which is reciprocally displaced in a vertical direction according to a rotating cam (85). An inner peripheral surface of the tappet case (12) is provided with an air-vent passage (34) through which air existing between the tappet case (12) and the lash adjuster (11) can be discharged upward when the lash adjuster (11) is being assembled.

Abstract: A hydraulic support element for a variable valve train of an internal combustion engine, which has a cylindrical pot-shaped housing and a hollow cylindrical piston guided for movement in this housing and whose inner end is supported by a compression spring on the base wall of the housing. The outer end extends past the housing and is formed as a hemispherical bearing head. The interior is divided into an inner supply pressure space and an outer switching pressure space that are connected by inlet openings in the cylindrical side walls of the housing and the piston with a cylinder head side supply pressure line and by a non-return valve to a high-pressure space enclosed between the inner end of the piston and the base wall of the housing, or to a cylinder head side switching pressure line and also by a central hole formed in the bearing head to a rocker arm side switching pressure channel. To prevent the entry of harmful particles into the supply pressure space and/or the switching pressure space of the piston, the piston has a ring-shaped recess in its cylindrical side wall in the area of the inlet openings on the outside in the radial direction, and a filter element constructed as a ring filter is inserted into the ring-shaped recess of the piston with an axial positive-fit connection.

Abstract: A lash compensator for a valve train component of an internal combustion engine is provided that includes an end-cap arranged within a reverse-spring control valve assembly of an axially moveable piston. The piston has a first reservoir and an inner radial wall configured with a through-aperture. The reverse-spring control valve assembly has a control valve housing, a bias spring, an end-cap, and a closing body. The end-cap is configured with a cupped end; an inner side of the cupped end receives a second lower end of the bias spring, and an outer side of the cupped end engages an upper portion of the closing body. The end-cap minimizes or eliminates the variation in flow resistance caused by a variation in end-coil geometry of the second lower end of the bias spring.

The deflection element is constructed as a circular cylindrical inner sleeve (40) that has, on one axial end, an oversize dimension relative to the inner diameter of the pressure piston (36), and the inner sleeve (40) is fixed in the pressure piston (36) with a positive and non-positive fit connection.

Abstract: A lash adjuster includes a cylindrical bottomed plunger mounted in a cylindrical bottomed body so as to be movable upward and downward and including a high-pressure chamber defined between an underside of the plunger and a bottom wall of the body to reserve an operating oil, a leak path defined by an inner circumference of the body and an outer circumference of the plunger so that the oil reserved in the high-pressure chamber leaks through the leak path with downward movement of the plunger, and a ring-shaped member located between the inner circumference of the body and the outer circumference of the plunger, normally projecting into the leak path and being elastically deformed radially inward or outward with increase in pressure of the oil at the high-pressure chamber side so as to be retreated from the leak path, thereby reducing flow resistance of the oil in the leak path.
