Abstract: A wearable haptic navigation system for obscured visibility environments, the wearable haptic navigation system including:
a wearable haptic component, in one alternative a body covering suite; and
a mapping data collector and processor in communication with the wearable haptic component; wherein the mapping data collector and processor collects data related to a path traversed by a user of the wearable haptic navigation system and generates at least one proprioception suggestion signal to the wearable haptic component providing the user with a suggested safe egress path and/or a suggested safe body position.-

Abstract: A device may include a high-level control layer comprising a convolutional neural network (CNN) configured to receive exoskeleton sensor data from one or more sensors on an exoskeleton and generate a user state estimate. The device may include a mid-level control layer configured to receive the user state estimate and generate a torque command for an actuator based on the user state estimate. The user state estimate may be an estimated gait phase, where the mid-level control layer generates the torque command as a function of the estimated gait phase based on an assistance profile. The high-level control layer may include a backward labeler and a real-time adaptation trainer. The backward labeler relabels ground truth gait phase from the exoskeleton sensor data using a local peak detection. The real-time adaptation trainer trains the CNN in a single epoch of backpropagation with the ground truth gait phase.

Abstract: A method and device for controlling a walking assist device is disclosed. The method includes determining a first state variable for a gait state of a user wearing the walking assist device based on a gait of the user, obtaining a second state variable which is smoothed and time-delayed from the first state variable, obtaining a third state variable by applying a torque control variable to the second state variable, and determining an assist torque to be provided by the walking assist device based on the obtained third state variable.

Abstract: A portable stretching apparatus includes a central support frame. The frame defines a top and legs extending from the top towards a relatively wider base. The legs form part of the sides of the frame. A seat is fixed on the top of the support frame. Hand grips are provided on either side of the seat. First and second support arms are pivotally mounted to opposite sides of the top of the central support frame. The first arm can be fixed in several angular orientations. The angular position of the second arm is substantially continuously variable. A control moves the angular position of the second arm while a person is on the apparatus. A restraint locks or restrains the person's foot or leg on at least one side of the frame.

Abstract: A hip component for a legged mobility device has a hip body, and a hip insert assembly for adjusting a size of the hip component. The hip insert assembly includes a carrier assembly mounted to the hip body, and a main insert assembly spaced apart from the carrier assembly. Adjustment screws are connected to the carrier assembly and the main insert assembly. The carrier assembly includes an adjustment mechanism including a drive shaft and an adjustment chain to effect translational movement of the adjustment screws to move the main insert assembly to adjust both width and depth of the hip component simultaneously. The hip component includes abduction/adduction control mechanism that includes elastomeric bushings that are selective as to resistance level and shape to control a degree of abduction and adduction, and to preset an initial angle. A leg component includes a central carrier, and first and second housings that are located on opposite sides of the central carrier. An adjustment mechanism including a drive shaft that drives driven shafts, such as by a worm/worm gear interaction, effects movement of the first housing to relative to the second housing to adjust a length of the leg component.

Abstract: A wearable apparatus comprises a passive artificial knee that comprises first and second links coupled at a knee joint, a passive compressive force generator coupled to the second link, and a release mechanism coupled to the first link. When an angle of the first and second links is less than a toggle angle, the release mechanism locks in a first operational mode, and the force generator compresses, resisting flexing of the second link. When the angle is larger than the toggle angle, the force generator decompresses and encourages flexion of said second link. When the force generator is extended and said compressive force is small, the release mechanism moves into a second operational mode, wherein the force generator neither resists nor encourages extension and flexion of said second link from said first link. The wearable apparatus comprises an exoskeleton trunk configured to couple to an upper body of a user.

Abstract: A harness for lifting a person in conjunction with a walker apparatus includes a seat portion made with flexible webbing. Two flexible, adjustable back straps are each fixed with a rear edge of the seat portion proximate one of two opposing lateral edges. Two flexible, adjustable front straps are each fixed with a front edge of the seat portion proximate one of the lateral edges. The back straps and front straps each include a connection mechanism for fixing with the walker apparatus. As such, with the harness under the person either in a prone position or a seated position, the back straps extend up the person's back and around his shoulders such that the back straps may be pulled forward and the walker apparatus raised so as to lift the person from the prone position into the seated position, or from the seated position into a standing position.

Abstract: The control method for lower-limb assistive exoskeletons assists human movement by producing a desired dynamic response on the human leg. Wearing the exoskeleton replaces the leg's natural admittance with the equivalent admittance of the coupled system formed by the leg and the exoskeleton. The control goal is to make the leg obey an admittance model defined by target values of natural frequency, resonant peak magnitude and zero-frequency response. The control achieves these objectives objective via positive feedback of the leg's angular position and angular acceleration. The method achieves simultaneous performance and robust stability through a constrained optimization that maximizes the system's gain margins while ensuring the desired location of its dominant poles.
