    Abstract: Spectroscopic apparatus and methods incorporating a gas sensor configured to detect low concentration gases, including gases that are hazardous volatiles are provided. Low concentration gases can comprise gases where detection of concentrations on the order of parts-per-million (ppm), and in many embodiments part-per-billion (ppb) is required. The gas may be a species, such as, for example hydrogen sulfide (H2S) that may be produced in drilling and/or volcanic eruptions. The spectroscopic apparatus and methods are configured to operate in particular atmospheres where gas detection can be challenging, such as in ambient air and/or in space where various contaminants may be present. The spectroscopic apparatus and methods may incorporate a long path length detector, such as, for example, a cavity-enhanced absorption spectrometer. The methods and apparatus further incorporate a wavelength modulation technique to improve the signal-to-noise ratio.

    Abstract: A spectrum measurement apparatus includes a signal generation unit, a detector, an AD converter, and an operation unit. An external cavity laser light source includes a quantum cascade laser and a diffraction grating. The signal generation unit outputs a wavelength sweep signal repeatedly giving an instruction for sweep of a resonant wavelength selected by the diffraction grating and a pumping instruction signal repeatedly giving an instruction for on/off of pumping of the quantum cascade laser in each period of wavelength sweep based on the instruction of the wavelength sweep signal. The operation unit inputs a digital value output from the AD converter, obtains an oscillation spectrum in each period of the wavelength sweep, and integrates the oscillation spectra obtained with changing the phase of the pumping instruction signal for each period of the wavelength sweep.

    Abstract: Technologies are generally described for concurrent activation of multiple illumination sources to analyze a sample. A controller may be configured to activate the illumination sources substantially simultaneously, where a current or voltage of each activated illumination source is modulated at a different frequency by respective circuit drivers of the controller. Each activated illumination source may be configured to illuminate the sample with light at a different emission wavelength, and one or more detectors may be configured to detect a composite signal from the sample in response to the illumination. The composite signal may include multiple returned signals, where each returned signal corresponds to light emitted from one of the activated illumination sources at a respective emission wavelength. One or more filters, each associated with a respective modulation frequency of one activated illumination source, may be configured to extract each returned signal from the composite signal for analysis.

    Abstract: An optical detector is provided with multiple light sources having distinct spectral characteristics, which are controlled on/off across a range of lighting intensity combinations. A measurement sensor receives radiated light that is reflected from a target surface via confined optical channels, and generates representative output signals. A local controller or a remote computing device receives the output signals or corresponding messages from the optical detector, and generates a low resolution spectral data set based on the signals for each of the lighting intensity combinations. The low resolution spectral data set is interpolated based on machine learning algorithms trained with high resolution data from a reference device to generate a high resolution spectral data set associated with the target surface. In an embodiment, an auxiliary sensor measures light reflected from one or more light sources, wherein output signals from the measurement sensor are normalized to output values from the auxiliary sensor.
