Abstract:
A process for treating wood comprising applying to the surface of the wood a boron based preservative which reacts with moisture within the wood to form a boron compound and alcohol and subjecting the wood with the applied preservative to a substantially moisture-free and enclosed environment for a period sufficient for the applied preservative to be absorbed into the wood and to produce the boron compound on reaction with the moisture in the wood and for the alcohol by-product of the reaction to be adsorbed within the wood structure.

The pore size, porosity, and pore distribution of a porous metal is controlled by applying a plasma spraying to the surface of the porous metal.
Abstract:
An apparatus for and method of depositing a polymeric film on a substrate (5), the apparatus comprising: a delivery unit (7, 8) for delivering an aerosol spray comprising aerosol droplets of a liquid precursor comprising a polymeric phase to the substrate, the polymeric phase comprising a polymeric material and at least one solvent; a heating unit (15) for at least heating an environment such as at least partially to evaporate the at least one solvent of the polymeric phase prior to the aerosol droplets depositing on the substrate; and an electrostatic field generation unit (9) for generating an electrostatic field between the delivery unit and the substrate, and electrostatically charging the aerosol droplets such that the aerosol droplets are electrostatically attracted to the substrate.
Abstract:
Methods and apparatus provide for a glass or glass ceramic substrate, comprising: a bulk layer; an enhanced positive ion concentration layer; and a reduced positive ion concentration layer, wherein the enhanced positive ion concentration layer contains substantially all modifier positive ions from the reduced positive ion concentration layer as a result of migration, the substrate does not include any further material thereon.
Abstract:
Apparatus and methods for applying powder coatings to a substrate using a magnetic brush developer, including a method and apparatus for applying powder coatings to a substrate either directly or by intermediate transfer using a magnetic brush with a rotating magnetic field and for preparing the coating materials. The apparatus and method includes a supply of prepared powder coating material, a magnetic brush having a rotating magnetic field for applying the powder coating material to the substrate; and an electric field between the magnetic brush having a rotating magnetic field and the substrate.
Abstract:
A recording method for printing on a plastic film surface of a print medium by ejecting droplets of a water-based ink composition onto the plastic film surface includes applying a water-based ink composition on the plastic film surface, and heating the water-based ink composition on the plastic film surface to a temperature of 40° C. or more. The water-based ink composition contains a coloring agent, 0.1% to 1.5% by weight of a silicone surfactant, an acetylene glycol surfactant, a pyrrolidone derivative, a thermoplastic resin, and water.
Abstract:
A process for forming a coating on a substrate, including the steps of effecting tribostatic charging of a body of powder by establishing a fluidised-bed of the body of powder in a fluidising chamber at least a part of which is conductive, applying a voltage to the conductive part of the fluidising chamber, immersing a substrate which is electrically non-conductive or poorly conductive, either electrically isolated or earthed, wholly or partly in the fluidised bed, withdrawing the substrate from the fluidised-bed and forming adherent particles of the powder into a continuous coating over at least part of the substrate.
Abstract:
A method for selectively assembling a molecular device on a substrate comprises contacting the first substrate with a solution containing molecular devices; impeding bonding of the molecular devices to the substrate such that application of a voltage potential to the substrate results in assembly of the molecular device on the substrate at a rate that is at least 1.5 times the rate of assembly of the molecular device on a voltage-neutral substrate; and applying a voltage potential to the substrate so as to cause the molecular devices to assemble on the substrate. A nanoscale computing device is described that includes a substrate, a pair of conductive input/output electrodes carried on this substrate and disposed in spaced-apart relationship and a substantially disordered assembly of nanowires formed on the substrate in a region between the electrodes, thereby forming at least one programmable conductive pathway between the pair of electrodes.
Abstract:
A method is shown for corrosion protecting a ductile iron pipe component which forms a part of a water or sewer line used in the waterworks industry as a part of a fluid conveyance system. A surface of the pipe component is coated with a corrosion resistant coating which is an aqueous phenolic resin dispersion. The pipe component is dipped in a bath of the corrosion resistant coating and then baked, dried and cooled. An electrostatic powder coating is applied over the base phenolic resin coating for added corrosion protection and durability.
