A closure 10 is provided for retaining fluid pressure within a vessel, and comprises a hub 12 having an access opening to the vessel, with the hub having a circumferential stop 17 and one or more recesses 50 each extending radially outward from an adjacent inner surface 26 of the hub. A door 22 is positioned between the stop surface and the vessel, and a latch member 30 brings the door into sealing engagement with the stop member. One or more lugs 24 each extend radially outward from an exterior surface of the door, such that a respective lug engages the hub about a respective recess to seal the door to the hub, while the door may be moved to pass through the one or more recesses and out of the hub.

A method to generate a ternary carburizing gas mixture, using a reaction of selective hydrogenation of acetylene in a stream of hydrocarbons to the form of ethylene, comprising the following steps: heating of the inside of the reactor with an inert gas to an operating temperature for a period of 20 minutes at a temperature of 300° K, passing a mixture of hydrogen and acetylene by the regiospecific catalyst, and moving out the reaction products on the outside after passing the mixture through the regiospecific catalyst, but generation is effected in a continuous mode in the operating temperature range of the regiospecific catalyst between 293° K and 398° K, preferably at a temperature of 350° K.

A closure (10) for sealing fluid within a pressure vessel having a hub (70) with an opening therein includes a door (12) and a plurality of clamp ring segments (14) for fitting over an exterior portion of both the closed door and the hub. A plurality of interconnecting members (18) connect ends of adjacent clamp ring segments, and an actuator mechanism (20) moves the plurality of clamp ring segments into and out of engagement with the door.

An apparatus for making a gaseous clathrate has a closed reaction vessel to which are fed a reaction gas and a reaction liquid while an interior of the vessel is maintained at a predetermined pressure and a predetermined temperature so that the gaseous clathrate is formed in the vessel. An outlet nozzle on the vessel defines a flow passage opening into the vessel and having an inner wall surface extending between an inner inlet end inside the vessel and an outer outlet end. The passage extends along an axis, is rotation-symmetrical about the axis, and is of decreasing flow cross section from its inner end to its outer end. The inner wall surface is curved in an S-shape from the inner end to the outer end so that pressure in the vessel forces the formed clathrate out through the passage with increasing compression as the flow cross section decreases.

An instrument is disclosed for carrying out controlled microwave assisted chemical processes, and that is particularly useful for handling relatively small samples. The instrument includes a needle, and a needle seal adjacent the needle and having a shaft coaxial with the needle and in communication with the needle. A pressure transducer is opposite the needle seal from the needle and in communication with the shaft. A housing holds the needle to the needle seal and the needle seal to the transducer. A chamber is formed between the housing and the needle seal. A lateral shaft goes through the needle seal from the coaxial shaft to the chamber in the housing, and a valve is in communication with the chamber.

The end cap section (10) has a tubular wall (12) extending from an enclosed first end (16) to an open second end (18). At least one mounting pad (30) is positioned on the outer surface (20) of the wall on the enclosed first end (16) thereof. Such mounting pad has a base portion (32a-e) supported on the wall (12) and a generally tubular stub portion (34a-e) extending outwardly from the base portion intermediate a proximal end adjoining the wall (12) and a distal end (40a-e) configurable for connection to a fluid component (90). With the stub proximal end being closed by the wall, such end is openable through the wall to provide a port opening into the interior volume of the vessel.

An autoclave for pressure and temperature treatment of objects includes a pressure container having a pressure resistant wall which encloses a pressure chamber for receiving the objects to be treated, the pressure chamber having a free inner diameter of at least 1.5 m; and a heat source for heating the objects received in the pressure chamber, the heat source including a plurality of microwave sources irradiating microwave radiation, which are arranged outside the pressure container. The microwave sources are distributed over the pressure resistant wall at an areal density of at least 4 microwave sources per square meter surface area of the pressure resistant wall; and the microwave radiation irradiated by the microwave sources is coupled through the pressure resistant wall into the pressure chamber.

A method of conducting microwave-assisted high pressure high temperature chemistry is disclosed. The method includes the steps of digesting a sample in a strong acid at a temperature of at least 200° C. in a pressure resistant vessel that includes a lid while exerting a defined force against the lid in order to maintain gases under pressure in the vessel; directing gas under excess pressure from the vessel into a circumferential passage defined by the vessel and its pressure resistant lid; and directing the gas from the circumferential passage outwardly from the lid while preventing gas from flowing outwardly over the edge of the vessel.
