Abstract:
Disclosed is an optical fiber having a silica-based core comprising an alkali metal oxide selected from the group consisting of K2O, Na2O, LiO2, Rb2O, Cs2O and mixtures thereof in an average concentration in said core between about 50 and 500 ppm by weight, said core further comprising chlorine and fluorine, wherein the average concentration of fluorine in said core is greater than the average concentration of alkali metal oxide in said core and the average concentration of chlorine in said core is greater than the average concentration of alkali metal oxide in said core; and a silica-based cladding surrounding and directly adjacent the core. By appropriately selecting the concentration of alkali metal oxide dopant in the core and the cladding, a low loss optical fiber may be obtained.

In one aspect, the invention features a fiber waveguide having a waveguide axis, including a first portion extending along the waveguide axis, and a second portion different from the first portion extending along the waveguide axis surrounding the first portion, wherein at least one of the first and second portions comprises a chalcogenide glass selected from the group consisting of Selenium chalcogenide glasses and Tellurium chalcogenide glasses, both the first and second portions have a viscosity greater than 103 Poise at some temperature, T, and the fiber waveguide is a photonic crystal fiber.
Abstract:
A method of forming an alkali metal oxide-doped optical fiber by diffusing an alkali metal into a surface of a glass article is disclosed. The silica glass article may be in the form of a tube or a rod, or a collection of tubes or rods. The silica glass article containing the alkali metal, and impurities that may have been unintentionally diffused into the glass article, is etched to a depth sufficient to remove the impurities. The silica glass article may be further processed to form a complete optical fiber preform. The preform, when drawn into an optical fiber, exhibits a low attenuation.

Abstract:
An object of the invention is to provide a quartz glass crucible for pulling up silicon single crystal and a method for producing the same, suitable for improving the productivity of the crucible and the quality of the silicon single crystal, which, by forming a crystalline layer on the inner surface of the quartz glass crucible during pulling up silicon single crystal, prevents degradation from occurring on the inner surface of the crucible and increases the ratio of single crystal while preventing the dislocation from forming on the single crystals. The objects above have been accomplished by a quartz glass crucible for pulling up silicon single crystal, having a double layered structure comprising a naturally occurring quartz glass outer layer and a synthetic quartz glass inner layer, said synthetic quartz glass inner layer contains at least one type of an alkali metal ion selected from the group consisting of Na ion, K ion, and Li ion, which is diffused or moved from said naturally occurring quartz glass outer layer into said synthetic quartz glass inner layer.
Abstract:
Disclosed is an optical fiber article for receiving pump radiation of a first wavelength for amplifying or generating radiation of a second wavelength. The optical fiber article includes a core for propagating light of the second wavelength. The core has a first index of refraction and includes a rare earth material. A cladding surrounds the core and has a second index of refraction that is less than the first index of refraction. The outer circumference of the cladding can include a plurality of sections, where the plurality of sections includes at least one substantially straight section and one inwardly curved section. The optical fiber article can also include at least one outer layer surrounding the cladding, where the index of refraction of the outer layer is less than the second refractive index. Methods for producing the optical fiber article are also disclosed, as well as methods for providing a preform for drawing such an optical fiber article.
Abstract:
A preform for a low loss fiber optic cable and method and apparatus for fabricating such a preform is provided. The method includes providing AlCl3 and CVD precursors and locally doping CaCl3. Alkali and/or alkaline earth fluxing agents can be introduced. The alkali and/or alkaline earths are doped along with the aluminum into the silica glass core.
