Abstract:
A mixture of a cellulose derivative and a liquid diluent is prepared which comprises at least 5 weight percent of the cellulose derivative, based on the total weight of the cellulose derivative and the liquid diluent. The mixing operating causes air to be entrapped in the mixture. The time for at least partially removing entrapped air is reduced by providing a cellulose derivative having a specific surface area of less than 0.20 m2/g measured by BET method for preparing the mixture.

A composition is provided, wherein the composition comprises a water-swellable, water-insoluble polymer, a blend of a hydrophilic polymer and a complementary oligomer capable of hydrogen bonding to the hydrophilic polymer, and a whitening agent, preferably a peroxide. The composition finds utility as a tooth whitening composition and is applied to the teeth in need of whitening, and then removed when the degree of whitening has been achieved. In certain embodiments, the composition is translucent. Methods for preparing and using the compositions are also disclosed.
Abstract:
The invention provides a cement paste composition comprising cement, cellulose nanocrystals, and optionally water. The cellulose nanocrystals can be present in an amount sufficient and effective to increase the flexural strength of cured cement prepared from the cement paste composition. The cellulose nanocrystals can also be present in an amount sufficient and effective to increase the workability of a cement paste prepared from the cement paste composition. The invention further provides a water reducing additive that reduces the amount of water required for desired workability of a cement composition. Use of the presence of the cellulose nanocrystals also results in an increased degree of hydration and cumulative heat evolution in comparison to a corresponding composition without the cellulose nanoparticles, thereby resulting in a higher total cure of the cement paste composition upon curing.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to latex compositions comprising hydroxyethyl cellulose grafted acrylic polymer emulsions and methods for preparing same without gelling or coagulation. The latex composition comprises at least about 0.2% of HEC by weight relative to the monomer weight, contains at least about 45% solid, and the average mean volume (mV) latex particle size is in the range of about 320-about 850 nm. Paint compositions incorporating the HEC grafted acrylic latex show high viscosity at static conditions and have no color flow and no syneresis compared paints containing a latex without HEC grafting. The present invention also relates to a cross-linking mechanism that cross-links latex particles at ambient conditions. This cross-linking mechanism comprises diacetone acrylamide (DAAM) and methacrylamide (MAM) with or without styrene.

A complex comprising a non-absorbable portion attached to an iron chelator moiety, a composition comprising the complex and the use of the complex in the treatment of colorectal cancer. In one embodiment the non-absorbable portion is a polymer such as a polysaccharide, including chitosan, chitin, cellulose or pectin. In one embodiment the iron chelator moiety comprises at least one functional group selected from catechol, hydroxamate or carboxylate, or any combination thereof.
Abstract:
A halogenated polysaccharide is provided having a halogen content of from about 1.0 wt. % to about 85 wt. % based on the total weight of the halogenated polysaccharide and having an average chain length of at least 6 monosaccharides. Methods of halogenating a polysaccharide to form a halogenated polysaccharide are provided that can be performed in the presence or absence of a proton solvent. Compositions such as articles of manufacture containing a halogenated polysaccharide and methods of producing such articles are also provided. The article of manufacture can also include one or more additional polymers, for example, polyvinylchloride (PVC). The article of manufacture can be, for example, a flooring tile, flooring plank, or carpet. Halogenated polysaccharides and products containing the same are bio-based, environmentally sustainable replacements or complements to existing polymers and polymer products.
Abstract:
Provided herein is a cellulose nanofiber-containing composition producing method for producing a cellulose nanofiber-containing composition that can be easily combined with compounds having a reactive double-bond group, and that contains only a small amount of uncured material that acts as a plasticizer in a molded product, using a simple producing method that does not require any process involving solvent displacement or solvent removal. A high-strength molded body prepared by using the cellulose nanofiber-containing composition is also provided. In refining cellulose in a mixture containing a compound having a reactive double-bond group and a hydroxyl group of 10 KOHmg/g or less and a defibrating resin as essential components, the cellulose has a moisture content of 4 to 25 parts by mass with respect to 100 parts by mass of the amount of the cellulose converted on the assumption that the percentage moisture of the cellulose is 0%.
