Abstract: An optical method for identifying locations of objects in a plane, including serially projecting light beams along a detection area, from a plurality of locations along an edge of the detection area, whereby a reflective object inserted into the detection area reflects the projected light beams, directing the reflections of the projected light beams arriving at the edge of the detection area onto a plurality of light detectors, in a manner that maximizes amounts of reflected light arriving at the detectors when the light arrives at a particular angle in relation to the edge, and calculating two-dimensional coordinates of the inserted object in the detection area based on the particular angle and the outputs of the detectors.

Abstract: An optical sight includes a housing, an optical element, and a photo detector. The housing has a main body, a pair of upwardly extending posts, and a cross member extending between the pair of upwardly extending post. The optical element is supported by the housing and positioned between the pair of upwardly extending posts and between the main body and the cross member. The photo detector is positioned in the housing and configured to detect ambient light at a target object. A first post of the pair of upwardly extending posts and the cross member are joined at a shoulder of the housing. The photo detector is formed in the shoulder of the housing.

Abstract: A light sensor includes a semiconductor substrate supporting a number of pixels. Each pixel includes a photoconversion zone extending in the substrate between a front face and a back face of the substrate. An optical diffraction grating is arranged over the back face of the substrate at a position facing the photoconversion zone of the pixel. For at least two different pixels of the light sensor, the optical diffraction gratings have different pitches. Additionally, the optical grating of each pixel is surrounded by an opaque wall configured to absorb at operating wavelengths of the sensor.

Abstract: An electronic device is provided, which includes an enclosure, an output component, a display screen and an optical sensor. The output component and the display screen are mounted on the enclosure. The output component includes a packaging shell, an infrared supplementary lighting lamp and a proximity infrared lamp; the packaging shell includes a packaging substrate; the infrared supplementary lighting lamp and the proximity infrared lamp are packaged in the packaging shell and born on the packaging substrate. The display screen is provided with a non-opaque entity region and includes a front surface capable of displaying a picture and a back surface back on to the front surface. The optical sensor is arranged on a side, where the back surface is positioned, of the display screen and corresponds to the non-opaque entity region.

Abstract: A mail screening apparatus is provided to perform the inspection of mail or similar objects. Terahertz inspection is used to localize potential suspicious areas by imaging the contents inside the envelope or small parcel. The mail screening apparatus includes a primary and a secondary inspection zone, preferably allowing inspection of the mail in a normal and a zoomed mode, respectively. The same light source, image capture device and intervening optical components are used in both normal and zoomed modes. Metal detection may optionally be used to enhance awareness in the presence of metallic content. In one implementation, metal detection zones are provided in an orthogonal configuration with respect to the primary inspection zone used for terahertz imaging to accommodate for both manual and automatic inspection of mail.

Abstract: The present disclosure relates to a method for characterizing a light source. The method includes providing a light source to be characterized, collecting light emitted from the light source by using imaging optics, the imaging optics generating a pupil of the collected light emitted from the light source, generating an image of a pupil of light emitted only from a first surface area of the light source at a detector using the imaging optics, laterally shifting the light source and the imaging optics relative to each other and after the lateral shift, generating an image of a pupil of light emitted only from a second surface area of the light source at the detector using the imaging optics. The imaging optics includes a field stop between the light source and the detector to select a portion of the light source's surface from which light is imaged at a time.

Abstract: A passive infrared motion detection sensor that includes a Fresnel focusing arrangement that creates at least a first infrared sensing region, a second infrared sensing region, and a third infrared sensing region, in which target detection in one or more infrared sensing regions is weighted to be distinguishable from target detection in remaining infrared sensing regions. The Fresnel focusing arrangement creates the weighted infrared sensing regions using a lenslet region, an optically opaque region and a plurality of extruded cylindrical lenslets that extend across a portion of both the lenslet region and the optically opaque region. The signal detection in at least the second weighted infrared sensing region, for example, an infrared sensing range between 6 and 10 feet, is weighted to easily distinguish between a pet within the second infrared sensing range and a person at any infrared sensing range.
