Abstract: A vacuum chamber may include an ambient side and a vacuum side. The vacuum chamber may be configured to carry a feedthrough that may include a hollow tube, a first O-ring captured by a first recess within the hollow tube and a rod extending through the hollow tube. The outer circumference of the rod may be configured to contact an entirety of an inner circumference of the first O-ring. A vacuum fitting having an inner circumference may be fixedly secured to the hollow tube. The rod may be operable to be linearly movable within the hollow tube and may be rotatably movable about an axis within the hollow tube. An object may be secured to the rod and may be linearly and rotatably moved within the vacuum chamber.

Abstract: The machinery and methods disclosed herein are based on the use of a specialized extruder configured to continuously convey and plasticize/moltenize selected lignocellulosic biomass and/or waste plastic materials into a novel variable volume tubular reactor, wherein the plasticized/moltenized material undergoes reaction with circumferentially injected supercritical water—thereby yielding valuable simple sugar solutions and/or liquid hydrocarbon mixtures (e.g., “neodiesel”), both of which are key chemical commodity products. The reaction time may be adjusted by changing the reactor volume. The machinery includes four zones: (1) a feedstock conveyance and plasticization/moltenization zone; (2) a steam generation and manifold distribution zone; (3) a central supercritical water reaction zone; and (4) a pressure let-down and reaction product separation zone. The machinery and methods minimize water usage—thereby enabling the economic utilization of abundant biomass and waste plastics as viable renewable feedstocks for subsequent conversion into alternative liquid transportation fuels and valuable green-chemical products.

Abstract: A system and a method for producing silicon from a SiO2-containing material that includes solid SiO2. The method uses a reaction vessel including a first section and a second section in fluid communication with said first section. The method includes: heating the SiO2-containing material that includes the solid SiO2 to a SiO2-containing material that includes liquid SiO2, at a sufficient temperature to convert the solid SiO2 into the liquid SiO2; converting, in the first section, the liquid SiO2 into gaseous SiO2 that flows to the second section by reducing the pressure in the reaction vessel to a subatmospheric pressure; and reducing, in the second section, the gaseous SiO2 into liquid silicon using a reducing gas. The reducing of the pressure is performed over a continuous range of interim pressure(s) sufficient to evaporate contaminants from the SiO2-containing material, and removing by vacuum, the one or more evaporated gaseous contaminants.

Abstract: A process for producing olefins comprising the steps of separating the liquid oil in the fractionator to produce a light oil product; separating the light oil product in the extractor to produce a paraffin fraction stream; increasing a pressure of the paraffin fraction stream in a paraffin pump to produce a pressurized paraffin stream; mixing the pressurized paraffin stream with a pressurized water feed in the water mixer to produce a paraffin-containing water stream; heating the paraffin-containing water stream in the water heater to produce a hot paraffin-water stream, wherein a temperature of the hot paraffin-water stream is greater than 450 deg C., wherein the short chain paraffins are operable to crack at the temperature of the hot paraffin-water stream; mixing the hot paraffin-water stream and the hot feedstock in the feed mixer to produce a mixed feed stream; and introducing the mixed feed stream to the supercritical unit.
