Abstract:
An air assisted spray nozzle having a nozzle body formed with an elongated mixing and atomizing chamber having an air inlet orifice communicating with one end of the chamber, a liquid inlet orifice communicating with a side of the chamber, and a nozzle tip having a discharge orifice located at the end of the chamber opposite the air inlet orifice. Transversely directed stream of pressurized air and liquid enter and converge in the mixing and atomization chamber of the nozzle body causing preliminary atomization of the liquid, which is thereupon directed under the force of the high velocity air stream out the discharge orifice and against a deflector flange of the nozzle tip which further atomizes the liquid and directs it into a well-defined flat fan spray pattern with substantially uniform liquid particle size. To enhance preliminary atomization, the mixing and atomizing chamber has an inwardly extending liquid impingement post in diametrically opposed relation to the liquid inlet orifice, and to facilitate further atomization and controlled direction of the discharging spray the deflector flange defines an arcuate shaped guide surface which is substantially wider than the width of the discharge orifice and has a terminal lip transversely offset from the dischage orifice.

The invention comprises an atomizing spray nozzle having an expansion chamber containing an impingement plate, or table and wherein a flow of liquid is introduced as a high velocity stream which strikes the impingement table and breaks up into finely atomized particles which are struck by a high velocity air stream in a direction at an angle to the direction of the liquid stream to further atomize the liquid particles as the mixture atomizes adjacent the impingement table and passes into a mixing area in the barrel of the nozzle. The nozzle includes a jet forming inlet for the liquid aimed from one side of the nozzle at the impingement table in the expansion chamber, an air inlet orifice member secured in one end of the nozzle at an angle to the liquid inlet and at one side of the expansion chamber with the nozzle barrel at the downstream side of the expansion chamber and an exit orifice member secured in the open discharge end of the barrel.

A low pressure blower operated airknife having a housing with an elongated primary air discharge orifice for directing a narrow width curtain of air. The airknife includes an air-augmenting shroud which defines auxiliary discharge orifices on opposite longitudinal sides of the primary air discharge orifice such that air discharging from the primary discharge orifice creates a low pressure condition adjacent the auxiliary air discharge orifices for drawing additional air through the auxiliary discharge orifices which augments the velocity and volume of the discharging air current without the necessity for increasing the air inlet pressure or blower size. The shroud may take alternative forms, including pairs of wings disposed on opposite sides of the primary discharge orifice or hollow structures that surround the airknife housing. The airknife further is adapted for low pressure direction and application of air laden particles, such as preatomized liquid particles.

An air assisted spray nozzle assembly adapted for more efficiently producing a full cone spray distribution with finely atomized particles distributed throughout the conical spray pattern. The spray nozzle assembly includes a nozzle body having a liquid passage communicating with the pressurized liquid supply and at least one air passage communicating with a pressurized air supply. An air cap is disposed at a downstream end of the body which includes an impingement surface against which liquid is impinged and directed radially outwardly, an expansion chamber area about the impingement surface into which radially directed liquid is further broken down and atomized by a pressurized air stream, and a plurality of circumferentially spaced axial flow passages disposed about the impingement surface and each communicating between the expansion chamber and an angularly oriented discharge orifice such that the air cap is effective for discharging a plurality of atomized liquid flow streams in an outwardly expanding conical spray pattern.
Abstract:
A self-cleaning spray nozzle in which a standard fitting serves as the nozzle body. A unitary valve assembly is inserted partially into the fitting and secured to it. The valve assembly includes a secured valve seat biased by a spring into a spraying head so that the valve seat and spraying head form a seal. The spraying head is designed so that it does not form a complete seal with the valve seat, the gap in the seal defining a metering orifice so that under normal fluid pressures, fluid will spray out of the orifice in a predetermined pattern. When a force sufficient to overcome the spring bias is applied to the spraying head, the spraying head separates from the valve seat breaking the seal and allowing the fluid to flush the outlet. The force can either be applied manually, or caused by an increase in fluid pressure. An optional deflection collar may be snapped onto the nozzle for influencing the direction of the spray.

A hand-held spray gun including a handle section, a barrel section mounted forwardly of the handle section, and a nozzle section mounted forwardly of the barrel section. The handle section has a liquid inlet at a rearward end thereof and is adapted to direct pressurized liquid in a straight longitudinal path through a relatively inexpensive plastic tube which functions both as a liquid conduit and as a mechanism for moving a valve follower of the gun between open and closed conditions in response to actuation of a trigger. The handle section further has a pressurized air inlet which communicates with the nozzle section through an air passageway defined between the liquid conduit tube and a barrel section housing for facilitating liquid atomization of the spray discharge. The nozzle tip has a multiplicity of spray orifices which are selectively locatable into operative position and at least some of which include an annular sealing member such that upon positioning of the spray orifice into operative position the associated sealing member blocks communication of pressurized air, enabling the gun to be operated in a purely hydraulic, non air assisted, spray mode.

A rotary disc atomizer adapted to generate relatively precisely controlled, uniformly sized spray droplets whether mounted in a vertical position or in significantly tilted positions. The atomizer includes a power driven rotary disc having a tapered fluid dispensing surface, a liquid supply whirl chamber in coaxial relation to the disc, and a liquid feed arrangement adapted to tangentially feed liquid into the whirl chamber so that it is rapidly moved in a relatively uniform thin sheet about the chamber and then exits in an annular uniform flow centrally onto the dispensing surface of the disc. The centrifical forces of the swirling feed liquid permit the atomizer to be mounted in substantially tilted positions without effecting the uniformity of the spray output or droplet size.
