Abstract: A process for utilizing bio-based oils and/or fats for producing biofuels includes the steps of: mixing alcohol with a raw material for forming a reaction mixture; pumping the reaction mixture to a reactor; mixing biogas as a catalyst with the reaction mixture in a selected process step either before or after the supply of the reaction mixture to a high-pressure pump, the biogas including methane and carbon dioxide; adjusting a temperature and pressure of the reactor so that the reaction mixture achieves a supercritical state; esterifying the reaction mixture to produce liquid biofuel and by-products; separating the by-products including methane and alcohol from the liquid biofuel; and recovering separated methane. An equivalent system for utilizing bio-based oils and/or fats for producing biofuels is also disclosed.

Abstract: Methods and compositions are provided for refining natural oils and for producing high-weight esters, high-weight acids, and/or high-weight derivatives thereof, wherein the compositions are made by cross-metathesizing low-weight unsaturated esters or low-weight unsaturated acids having hydrocarbon chain lengths less than or equal to C24 with an olefin feedstock, thereby forming a metathesized product composition including high-weight esters or high-weight acids having hydrocarbon chain lengths greater than C18, wherein at least a portion of the hydrocarbon chain lengths in the metathesized product are larger than the hydrocarbon chain lengths in the starting feedstock.

Abstract: Provided herein are blends oils or fatty acids comprising more than 50% medium chain fatty acids, or the fatty acid alkyl esters thereof, and having low melting points. Such blends are useful as a fuel or as a starting material for the production of, for example, a biodiesel. Also provided genetically altered or modified plants, modified such that the amount of medium chain fatty acids generated by the plant are increased. Further provided is a method of predicting the melting point of a blend of fatty acid methyl esters and the use of such a method for identifying blends suitable for use as, for example, a biodiesel.
