Abstract: Apparatus for producing annular corrugations in the wall of thin metal tubing in the manufacture of corrugated metal hose includes a plurality of dies. Each die comprises a helical rib of greater than 360.degree. extent formed on the inner rim of an annular ring with the ribs on successive dies being progressively thinner and having successively closer pitches so as to progressively deepen the corrugations and make them narrower. The dies are mounted to rotate in synchronization with each other at identical angular speeds, and are arranged in pairs in one or more stages with the dies in each stage engaging opposite sides of the tube. A non-rotatable guide member projects inside the first die ring and has an aperture to permit the die to contact the tubing at one location on the tubing circumference while the remainder of the tubing is rigidly supported against collapse by the guide member. Transfer of the corrugations from one die ring to the next is assisted by providing the intermediate dies with lead-in portions having the same pitch as the preceding die ring.

Abstract: A micro-fluidic reactor may comprise a photosensitive glass substrate with a plurality of features produced by etching. The features may include micro-channels, micro-lenses, and slots for receiving optical fibers. During operation of the micro-fluidic reactor, the optical fibers may transmit optical signals for measuring characteristics of fluid reagents and reactions taking place. The micro-lenses may focus optical signals from the optical fibers to create an approximately collimated optical path for the optical signals, reducing optical spread and enhancing fiber-to-fiber optical power coupling.

Abstract: A method for producing scalable, low cost, reliable, compliant, low profile, low insertion force, high-density, separable and reconnectable interposer for high speed, high performance electronic circuitry and semiconductors. The method can be used to make, for example, electrical connections from components such as a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) to another PCB, MPU, NPU, or other semiconductor device. A normalized working range for an array of elastic contacts of the interposer can be about 0.2 to 1.0. A reversible normalized working range is maintained through multiple connections and reconnections using a highly elastic material for the contact arms. In one aspect, a first electrical component having a first array pitch can be connected to a second electrical component having a second array pitch.

Abstract: A method for triggering a new regeneration event in a soot-trapping particulates filter disposed in an exhaust gas stream of an internal combustion engine, comprising the steps of determining instantaneous engine speed and engine load; determining instantaneous mass fractions for wet soot and for dry soot in the exhaust gas stream for the instantaneous engine speed and load; determining instantaneous concentrations of wet and dry soot particles in the exhaust gas; determining the rates of accumulation of wet soot and dry soot in the particulates filter; determining the total amounts of wet soot and dry soot accumulated in said soot-trapping device during all engine operation conditions since the latest previous regeneration event; and triggering the new regeneration event when the total amount of wet soot and dry soot exceeds a permissible value.

Abstract: A method to fabricate a tilted logpile photonic crystal requires only two lithographic exposures and does not require mask repositioning between exposures. The mask and photoresist-coated substrate are spaced a fixed and constant distance apart using a spacer and the stack is clamped together. The stack is then tilted at a crystallographic symmetry angle (e.g., 45 degrees) relative to the X-ray beam and rotated about the surface normal until the mask is aligned with the X-ray beam. The stack is then rotated in plane by a small stitching angle and exposed to the X-ray beam to pattern the first half of the structure. The stack is then rotated by 180° about the normal and a second exposure patterns the remaining half of the structure. The method can use commercially available DXRL scanner technology and LIGA processes to fabricate large-area, high-quality tilted logpile photonic crystals.

Abstract: An elastic contact array circuitized substrate includes a circuitized substrate provided with circuit traces, and an array of three dimensional contact elements joined to the circuitized substrate and electrically coupled to the circuit traces. In one configuration, the array of three dimensional contacts are formed in a spring sheet material having anisotropic grains whose long direction is selected with respect to the longitudinal direction of elastic contact arms, in accordance with desired properties. In another configuration of the invention, the circuit traces are formed integrally within the spring sheet material.
