    Abstract: A method and apparatus (20) for intermittently cutting a moving target web (26) includes rotating a knife roll (32) having at least one knife member (44) to provide an operative knife-member speed, and rotating an anvil roll (34) having at least one anvil member (46) to provide an operative anvil-member speed. The knife roll and anvil roll have been positioned to provide an operative nip region (30) therebetween, and a substantially continuous target web (26) has been moved at a selected web speed through the nip region. A rotational positioning of the knife member has been coordinated with a rotational positioning of its cooperating anvil member to provide an operative, cutting engagement between the knife member and its cooperating anvil member, thereby cutting the moving web at cut locations which are intermittently spaced along a machine-direction (22) of the target web.

    Abstract: The present invention provides a yarn composed of polytrimethylene terephthalate fibers, particularly polytrimethylene terephthalate multifilamentary fibers having a single-fiber size in a range from 1 to 56 dtex, which are collected together to have a total size in a range from 2000 to 22000 dtex. Further, the present invention provides a racket string composed of polytrimethylene terephthalate multifilamentary fibers having a single-fiber size in a range from 1 to 56 dtex, which are collected together to have a total size in a range from 7000 to 22000 dtex, and a musical instrumental string composed of polytrimethylene terephthalate multifilamentary fibers having a single-fiber size in a range from 1 to 56 dtex, which are collected together to have a total size in a range from 2000 to 14000 dtex. The yarn according to the present invention is high in strength, elastic recovery and stress-retaining ratio as well as excellent in water resistance, softness and homogeneity of yarn properties. The racket string according to the present invention can be set across a racket frame, for example, for tennis or other, games under a high tension, whereby high resilience is obtainable when the string is set, and maintained for a long time. Also, this racket string is excellent in impact resistance, durability and water resistant. The musical instrumental string is stable in tuning over time and with a change in humidity as well as excellent in tunability.

    Abstract: A wire rope for a heavy-load crane, such as a ladle crane is provided that is not only almost rotation-resistant but is also unlikely to be broken by wear and fatigue of wires. The rotation-resisting wire rope has a plurality of side strands. In side each strand, wires are laid in the same direction as the lay of core strand wires, around the periphery of a core strand. The side strands are laid in a direction opposite to the lay of the core strand wires so as to form the wire rope. The side strands preferably have a smaller pitch multiple than a pitch multiple of the wire rope. The ratio between a diameter of the side strands and a diameter of the core strand is preferably about 1.3 to about 1.8. The pitch multiple of strands is preferably about 5 to about 8 and the pitch multiple of the wire rope is preferably about 8 to about 10. Both the core strand and the side strands preferably have shaped wires, having a flattened surface, at an outermost ply.
