Abstract: An automation controller is disclosed which provides central management of an automated upgrade process in an IT infrastructure. In an example, one or more hardware processors are configured as a central initiation point for the automated upgrade process by machine-readable instructions. The machine-readable instructions are executable to identify, based on at least one automation input file, at least one target node in the at least one IT infrastructure to be upgraded. The machine-readable instructions are also executable to associate at least one patch firmware bundle with the at least one target node in the at least one IT infrastructure. The machine-readable instructions are also executable to execute an automation code script. The machine-readable instructions are also executable to manage the automated upgrade process through to exception or successful completion of the automated upgrade process at the at least one target node in the at least one IT infrastructure.

Abstract: An illustrative approach accelerates file indexing operations for block-level backup copies in a data storage management system. A cache storage area is maintained for locally storing and serving key data blocks, thus relying less on retrieving data on demand from the backup copy. File indexing operations are used for populating the cache storage area for speedier retrieval during subsequent live browsing of the same backup copy, and vice versa. The key data blocks cached while file indexing and/or live browsing an earlier backup copy help to pre-fetch corresponding data blocks of later backup copies, thus producing a beneficial learning cycle. The approach is especially beneficial for cloud and tape backup media, and is available for a variety of data sources and backup copies, including block-level backup copies of virtual machines (VMs) and block-level backup copies of file systems, including UNIX-based and Windows-based operating systems and corresponding file systems.

Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer program products for selection of a witness during virtualization system recovery after a disaster event. A recovery plan is configured to identify a witness that is then used to elect a leader to implement the recovery. Various system, and/or network, and/or component failures and/or various loss of function of components of the virtualization system can trigger initiation of the recovery plan. Based on the particular recovery plan that is invoked upon a determination of a network outage, or component failure or loss of function of a component of the virtualization system, a particular witness corresponding to a subset of entities of the particular recovery plan is selected. The witness is used to elect the leader, and the leader initiates actions of the recovery plan. The implementation of the recovery plan includes consideration of the health of components that would potentially be involved in the recovery actions.

Abstract: A method of restarting a virtual machine (VM) running in a cluster of hosts in a first data center, in a second data center, includes: transmitting an image of the VM to the second data center; in response to determining that a host in the cluster in which the VM was running has failed, determining whether or not there are sufficient resources in the cluster to run the VM in another host in the cluster; and upon determining that there are not sufficient resources in the cluster to run the VM in another host in the cluster, setting the VM to be inactive in the first data center, and communicating with a control plane in the second data center to set as active, and power on, a VM in the second data center using the image of the VM that has been transmitted to the second data center.

Abstract: Snapshot-based disaster recovery (DR) orchestration systems and methods for virtual machine (VM) failover and failback do not require that VMs or their corresponding datastores be actively operating at the DR site before a DR orchestration job is initiated, i.e., before failover. An illustrative data storage management system deploys proprietary components at source data center(s) and at DR site(s). The proprietary components (e.g., storage manager, data agents, media agents, backup nodes, etc.) interoperate with each other and with the source and DR components to ensure that VMs will successfully failover and/or failback. DR orchestration jobs are suitable for testing VM failover scenarios (“clone testing”), for conducting planned VM failovers, and for unplanned VM failovers. DR orchestration jobs also handle failback and integration of DR-generated data into the failback site, including restoring VMs that never failed over to fully re-populate the source/failback site.

Abstract: Methods and systems for automatically upgrading or synchronizing a remote data management agent running on a remote host machine (e.g., a hardware server) to a particular version that is in-sync with a corresponding version used by a cluster of data storage nodes controlling the remote data management agent are described. The remote agent may be initially installed on the remote host and subsequent updates to the remote agent may be performed using the remote agent itself without requiring intervention by the remote host. The remote agent may comprise a backup agent and a bootstrap agent that are each exposed in different network ports or associated with different port numbers or networking addresses. The backup agent may perform data backup related tasks for backing up files stored on the remote host and the bootstrap agent may perform upgrade related tasks for upgrading the backup agent.

Abstract: In an example embodiment, a solution is used to provide container volume replication via a container storage replication log and volume buffer synchronization, which is built on top of a container cloud platform whose container metadata and replication runtime configuration are all managed by a storage manager (a service orchestrated by its job scheduler and service orchestrator). This container volume replication ensures the data security for a long-running service in the container. In the case of any disaster, the in-memory database and application data inside of the container can be recovered via volume replication. This provides container volume replication for long-running containerized applications whose states keep changing.

Abstract: Embodiments of the present disclosure involve a method, device and computer program product for data backup. The method includes receiving, from a destination node, a workload of a backup job, the workload being determined by the destination node in response to a request for the backup job from a source node. The method further includes determining hardware configuration to be allocated to a proxy virtual machine deployed in a plurality of virtual machines on the source node based on the workload, the proxy virtual machine including a backup application for performing data backup for the plurality of virtual machines. The method further includes transmitting an indication of the hardware configuration to the proxy virtual machine of the source node so as to enable the backup application to perform the backup job using the hardware configuration.

Abstract: Recovery points can be used for replicating a virtual machine and reverting the virtual machine to a different state. A filter driver can monitor and capture input/output commands between a virtual machine and a virtual machine disk. The captured input/output commands can be used to create a recovery point. The recovery point can be associated with a bitmap that may be used to identify data blocks that have been modified between two versions of the virtual machine. Using this bitmap, a virtual machine may be reverted or restored to a different state by replacing modified data blocks and without replacing the entire virtual machine disk.
