    Abstract: An automation controller is disclosed which provides central management of an automated upgrade process in an IT infrastructure. In an example, one or more hardware processors are configured as a central initiation point for the automated upgrade process by machine-readable instructions. The machine-readable instructions are executable to identify, based on at least one automation input file, at least one target node in the at least one IT infrastructure to be upgraded. The machine-readable instructions are also executable to associate at least one patch firmware bundle with the at least one target node in the at least one IT infrastructure. The machine-readable instructions are also executable to execute an automation code script. The machine-readable instructions are also executable to manage the automated upgrade process through to exception or successful completion of the automated upgrade process at the at least one target node in the at least one IT infrastructure.

    Abstract: Methods, systems, and computer program products for selection of a witness during virtualization system recovery after a disaster event. A recovery plan is configured to identify a witness that is then used to elect a leader to implement the recovery. Various system, and/or network, and/or component failures and/or various loss of function of components of the virtualization system can trigger initiation of the recovery plan. Based on the particular recovery plan that is invoked upon a determination of a network outage, or component failure or loss of function of a component of the virtualization system, a particular witness corresponding to a subset of entities of the particular recovery plan is selected. The witness is used to elect the leader, and the leader initiates actions of the recovery plan. The implementation of the recovery plan includes consideration of the health of components that would potentially be involved in the recovery actions.

    Abstract: A method of restarting a virtual machine (VM) running in a cluster of hosts in a first data center, in a second data center, includes: transmitting an image of the VM to the second data center; in response to determining that a host in the cluster in which the VM was running has failed, determining whether or not there are sufficient resources in the cluster to run the VM in another host in the cluster; and upon determining that there are not sufficient resources in the cluster to run the VM in another host in the cluster, setting the VM to be inactive in the first data center, and communicating with a control plane in the second data center to set as active, and power on, a VM in the second data center using the image of the VM that has been transmitted to the second data center.

    Abstract: Methods and systems for automatically upgrading or synchronizing a remote data management agent running on a remote host machine (e.g., a hardware server) to a particular version that is in-sync with a corresponding version used by a cluster of data storage nodes controlling the remote data management agent are described. The remote agent may be initially installed on the remote host and subsequent updates to the remote agent may be performed using the remote agent itself without requiring intervention by the remote host. The remote agent may comprise a backup agent and a bootstrap agent that are each exposed in different network ports or associated with different port numbers or networking addresses. The backup agent may perform data backup related tasks for backing up files stored on the remote host and the bootstrap agent may perform upgrade related tasks for upgrading the backup agent.
