Abstract: An integral optical stack includes a lens film having first and second major surfaces. The first major surface includes microlenses having an average peak-to-valley height PV1. A light absorbing layer is disposed on the lens film and defines a plurality of openings. A substantially planarizing optically diffusive layer is disposed on the first major surface of the lens film, conforming to the microlenses. The optically diffusive layer includes a plurality of nanoparticles. A polymeric material bonds the nanoparticles to each other to form a plurality of nanoparticle aggregates defining a plurality of voids therebetween. The optically diffusive layer has an average thickness greater than about 8 microns, and an index of refraction of less than about 1.25. Any non-planarity of a major surface of the optically diffusive layer due to the microlenses of the first major surface has an average peak-to-valley height PV2, PV2≤0.7 PV1.

Abstract: An optical system includes a lens layer having a first major surface including first and second microlenses and a first light absorbing layer. The light absorbing layer defines first and second through openings with a one-to-one correspondence between the first and second microlenses and respective first and second through openings. Each pair of first microlens and first through opening centered on a first optical axis makes a first angle with a normal to the first light absorbing layer. Each pair of second microlens and second through opening centered on a second optical axis makes a second angle, different than the first angle, with the normal to the first light absorbing layer. A light source emits light incident on the first major surface side. The emitted light includes first and second light beams carrying respective first and second information and propagating substantially parallel to the first and second optical axes, respectively.

Abstract: Optical films are disclosed that include a plurality of interference layers. Each interference layer reflects or transmits light primarily by optical interference. The total number of the interference layers is less than about 1000. For a substantially normally incident light in a predetermined wavelength range, the plurality of interference layers has an average optical transmittance greater than about 85% for a first polarization state, an average optical reflectance greater than about 80% for an orthogonal second polarization state, and an average optical transmittance less than about 0.2% for the second polarization state.

Abstract: An integral optical construction includes a lens layer including a structured first major surface having a plurality of microlenses. An optically opaque mask layer is disposed on the lens layer and defines a plurality of openings. Each of the openings extends from a first major surface of the mask layer facing the lens layer to an opposite second major surface of the mask layer. The openings are in a one-to-one correspondence with the microlenses. Regions of the mask layer between the openings have an optical density of greater than about 2 for at least a first visible wavelength in a visible wavelength range. An optical adhesive layer is disposed on, and makes physical contact with, the second major surface of the mask layer. The optical adhesive layer defines a recess at each of the openings. The recess includes a closed bottom and an opposite open top open to the opening.

Abstract: An optical construction includes a lens film and a mask layer. The lens film includes an outermost structured first major surface and an opposing outermost substantially planar second major surface. The first major surface includes a plurality of microlenses arranged along orthogonal first and second directions. The mask layer is disposed on the second major surface of the lens film and includes a first layer including a first metal, a second layer including a second metal and a third layer disposed between the first and second layers. For substantially normally incident light, each of the first and second layers has an optical reflectance of greater than about 5%, the third layer has an optical transmittance of greater than about 70%, and the mask layer has an optical reflectance of less than about 20%. The mask layer defines a plurality of through openings aligned to the microlenses in a one-to-one correspondence.

Abstract: An optical filter has an average optical transmission of greater than about 50% in a visible wavelength range (e.g., wavelengths from about 420 nm to about 550 nm) and an optical density greater than about 1.5 in an infrared wavelength range (e.g., wavelengths from about 650 nm to about 800 nm). The optical filter can have a sharp band edge between the visible and infrared ranges. For example, a change in percent transmission of at least about 30% can occur over a wavelength range not greater than about 10 nm wide and/or the slope of the band edge can be greater than about 5%/nm. An optical system includes the optical filter disposed between an emissive display and an optical sensor.
