Abstract: An optical device for sensing a presence of an analyte in a person is provided. The optical device includes a light source, an optical stack, and a reader. The light source emits a first light having a first wavelength. The optical stack is placed on a skin of the person. The optical stack includes a sensor material and an optical filter. The sensor material emits a second light having a second wavelength when irradiated with the first light. An optical property of the second light is sensitive to the presence of the analyte. The optical filter is disposed on the sensor material and includes a plurality of microlayers numbering at least 10 in total. The optical filter has different first and second transmittances at the respective first and second wavelengths.

Abstract: An optical system is disclosed and includes an optical sensor configured to receive light and form an image. The optical system further includes a microlens film including a structured first major surface opposite a second major surface, the structured first major surface includes a regular array of spaced apart microlenses arranged across a width and a length of the microlens film and each microlens has an effective imaging area and configured to form an image onto the optical sensor. A light absorbing layer is disposed on the array of spaced apart microlenses and reduces the effective imaging area of each microlens by at least 10%. A display panel, the optical sensor, the microlens film and the display plane are substantially co-extensive with each other along the width and length of the microlens film.

Abstract: Multilayer optical film reflective polarizers previously considered to have excessive off-axis color can provide adequate performance in an LC display in an “on-glass” configuration, laminated to a back absorbing polarizer of the display, without any light diffusing layer or air gap in such laminate. The reflective polarizer is a tentered-one-packet (TOP) multilayer film, having only one packet of microlayers, and oriented using a standard tenter such that birefringent microlayers in the film are biaxially birefringent. The thickness profile of optical repeat units (ORUs) in the microlayer packet is tailored to avoid excessive perceived color at normal and oblique angles. Color at high oblique angles in the white state of the display is reduced by positioning thicker ORUs closer to the absorbing polarizer, and by ensuring that, with regard to a boxcar average of the ORU thickness profile, the average slope from an ORU(600) to an ORU(645) does not exceed 1.8 times the average slope from an ORU(450) to the ORU(600).

Abstract: A multilayer optical film including a first layer having an index of refraction n1 at a wavelength λ in a range from about 580 nm to about 650 nm, and a second layer having an index of refraction n2 at λ is described. The first and second layers define an interface therebetween comprising a two-dimensional grating. The grating may have an average height H such that |n1−n2|*H is in a range from 0.24 micrometers to 0.3 micrometers. Optical systems including the multilayer optical film are described. A subpixel in a display surface of the optical system may be diffracted into a zero diffraction order and a plurality of first diffraction orders where the intensities of the zero and first diffraction orders are with 10% of each other at λ. The optical system may have a modulation transfer function greater than 0.4 at 10 line pairs per millimeter.

Abstract: An optical element including an array of microlenses, a pinhole mask, and a wavelength selective filter is described. The pinhole mask includes an array of pinholes with each pinhole in the array of pinholes aligned with a microlens in the first array of microlenses. The wavelength selective filter is adapted to transmit a first light ray having a first wavelength and transmitted from a first microlens in the array of microlenses through a first pinhole in the array of pinholes aligned with the first microlens, and to attenuate a second light ray having the first wavelength and transmitted from the first microlens through a second pinhole in the array of pinholes aligned with a second microlens in the first array of microlenses adjacent to the first microlens.

Abstract: An OLED display including a display panel and a color-correction component is described. A plurality of comparative display panels otherwise equivalent to the display panel but having one or more different optical thicknesses of OLED layers have a maximum white-point color shift from 0 to 45 degrees of WPCSC45 and a white-point axial efficiency of WPAEC. The plurality of comparative display panels defines a performance curve along a boundary of performance points. The OLED display and the display panel have respective maximum white-point color shifts from 0 to 45 degrees of WPCS45 and WPCS045 and respective white-point axial efficiencies of WPAE and WPAE0. WPCS045 and WPAE0 defines a performance point of the display panel to the right of the performance curve and WPCS45 and WPAE defines a performance point of the OLED display above or to the left of the performance curve. Methods of making the OLED display are described.

Abstract: Headsets and head-mounted displays including first and second diffractive elements are described. In some cases, the first and second diffractive elements include first and second grating surfaces, and for at least one wavelength, the first and second grating surfaces have at least one different corresponding diffractive property. The head-mounted display may include two-dimensionally pixelated adjacent first and second display surfaces for displaying images, and first and second diffractive elements disposed adjacent the respective first and second display surfaces. In some cases, the first diffractive element is configured to diffract a first wavelength λ1, but not a different second wavelength into zero and first diffraction orders having intensities within 5% of each other, and the second diffractive element is configured to diffract the second wavelength but not the first wavelength 1, into zero and first diffraction orders having intensities within 5% of each other.

Abstract: Extended area lighting devices include a light guide and diffractive surface features on a major surface of the light guide. The diffractive surface features provide low distortion for viewing objects through the light guide. Light from discrete light source(s) is injected into the light guide, and the diffractive surface features interact with the injected light to couple guided-mode light out of the light guide. The out-coupled light produces one or more bands whose apparent shape changes with viewing position. The bands may be bright bands that correspond to the discrete light sources, or dark bands associated with an optional non-uniform reflective structure extending along a side surface of the light guide. Multiple bands may form a pattern that changes with viewing position, the pattern of bands having a 3-dimensional appearance for at least some viewing positions. The lighting devices can be used as luminaires for general lighting or decorative lighting.

Abstract: A reflector and a light fixture that includes the reflector are provided, where the reflector has a reflecting surface having a shape which closely approximates a determined surface which is series of ellipsoidal section segments, wherein each ellipsoidal section segment has a first focus A and a second focus B, wherein first focus A is the same point for each ellipsoidal section segment, and wherein, for successive ellipsoidal section segments, focus B is at a successive location along a line. In some embodiments, the light fixture additionally comprises a light source, typically located at focus A. The present disclosure enables the projection of a visually striking, linearly extended pattern of light on a wall from a fixture mounted on that same wall, where the fixture may furthermore have very little depth, i.e., orthogonal extension outward from that wall.
