Abstract: The invention relates to novel composites for capture, e.g., absorption, of condensable gases and vapors from atmospheric sources, and gas or vapor streams, and the recovery of the condensed gases and vapors from the composites, as well as passive methods absent of external sources of energy for conducting the capturing and recovery processes. The composites include a hydrophilic matrix; hydrophilic solids embedded or immersed in the matrix, in close proximity to each other; and porogenic material embedded in the matrix, having a size larger than the hydrophilic solids; wherein selective removal of the porogenic material from the matrix forms a hierarchically porous matrix.

Abstract: Sorbent material sheets provide for enhanced performance in vapor adsorbing applications over conventional canisters and other emissions control equipment. The sorbent material sheets can be formed as part of a small, lightweight canister, or can be integrated into a fuel tank. The sorbent material sheets can also be used as part of an onboard refueling vapor recovery system to control volatile organic compound emissions from fuel tanks of gasoline vehicles, such as automobiles.

Abstract: A phosphorus adsorbent, which is used for adsorbing phosphorus in extracorporeal circulation, is a powder comprising a carbonate of a rare earth metal or an oxide of a Group 4 element and having a solubility in 100 g of water at 20° C. of 10 mg or less. The porous fiber, which comprises the phosphorus adsorbent carried therein, shows a change in pH value of from −1.0 to +1.0 inclusive before and after stirring in physiological saline for 4 hours. The phosphorus adsorption columns respectively comprise the phosphorus adsorbent and the porous fiber each disposed therein.

Abstract: The present invention provides efficient reaction conditions by clarifying a relationship between a contact time and an optimum particle diameter etc. in a method for reacting a reaction object with a liquid containing the reaction object being in contact with a granular porous body. The upper limit D (mm) of the particle diameter of the granular porous body is determined from D=0.556×LN (T)+0.166 in a column flow method in non-circulation type, and determined from D=0.0315×T+0.470 in the column flow method in a circulation type and a shaking method. The contact time T (seconds) is given by a value obtained by dividing the volume (m3) of the granular porous body by the flow rate (m3/second) of the liquid in the column flow method in non-circulation type, given by a value obtained by multiplying the fluid flow time (seconds) of the liquid by a volume ratio obtained by dividing the volume of the granular porous body by the volume of the liquid in the column flow method in a circulation type, and given by a value obtained by multiplying the volume ratio by the elapsed time (seconds) after addition of the granular porous body in the liquid in the shaking method.

Abstract: A blood treatment system comprising at least one first device and at least one second device, wherein the first device is a membrane filter for the removal of toxic mediators from blood and the second device is suitable for the removal of granulocytes and monocytes from blood. The first device has a first blood flow path a first blood flow path for conducting blood through and the second device has a second blood flow path. The first and second devices are serially connected in succession in such a way that the first blood flow path is in fluid communication with the second blood flow path.The membrane has an interior filter space in its housing and a semipermeable membrane arranged in the interior filter space, which membrane divides the interior filter space into a retentate chamber and permeate chamber. The housing has a blood inlet device and a blood outlet device that are in fluid communication with the retentate chamber, as well as a permeate outlet for diverting permeate from the permeate chamber. The blood inlet device, the retentate chamber and the blood outlet device form the first blood flow path. The membrane filter has a separation characteristic such that the sieve coefficient for albumin, SKAlb, is within the range from 0.015 to 0.35.
