Abstract: Transport compositions include a crude oil composition and a solvent formulation including at least one terpene component. In some embodiments, the terpene is a monoterpene. In some embodiments, the terpene is pure gum turpentine, oil of turpentine, a component of turpentine, or a combination of these. Addition of a minimal amount of solvent formulation to the crude oil composition raises the flash point of the mixture, preferably to a predetermined value, which may be in the range of 100 to 120° F., in the range of 120 to 140° F., above 140° F., or above 170° F., depending on the application. The amount of terpene is preferably in the range about 0.005 to about 5 percent by total weight of the transport composition. Methods of raising the flash point of a crude oil composition and methods of increasing the safety of handling a crude oil composition are also disclosed.

Abstract: Methods to synthesize fuels and chemicals from natural gas liquids are described. Higher alcohols are synthesized starting from natural gas liquid compounds by converting an alkane from a NGL to an olefin, dimerizing said olefin, and, hydrating said olefin product to form a higher alcohol. Higher alcohols are synthesized starting from natural gas liquid compounds by converting an alkane from a NGL to an olefin, oxidizing the olefin to form a ketone or aldehyde and, hydrogenating the aldehyde or ketone product to form a higher alcohol. Thus, NGL component butane may be dehydrogenated to form butane, butylene is oxidized in the presence of a catalyst to form methylethyl ketone and methylethyl ketone hydrogenated to form butanol.

Abstract: A hydrocarbon composition that is produced through a solvent extraction of woody tree material is provided. The composition is suitable for use as a petroleum substitute. The woody tree material is sourced from hydrocarbon-bearing trees or shrubs containing relatively low molecular weight hydrocarbons. Suitable tree species include pine and eucalyptus trees. A raw woody tree biomass is processed into solvent-permeable particles and chips. Naturally occurring hydrocarbons found in the wood particles are extracted using an organic solvent extraction process. The organic solvent utilized is a mixture of organic solvents that includes a non-polar solvent and a polar solvent. The extracted hydrocarbons are separated from the solvent mixture and may be used as a petroleum substitute, while the solvent may be reused in the extraction operation.

Abstract: Modification of the amino acid sequence of a phenylpyruvate decarboxylase from Azospirillum brasilense produces a novel group of phenylpyruvate decarboxylases with improved specificity to certain substrates, including in particular C7-C11 2-ketoacids such as, for example, 2-ketononanoate and 2-keto-octanoate. This specificity enables effective use of the phenylpyruvate decarboxylase in, for example, an in vivo process wherein 2-ketobutyrate or 2-ketoisovalerate are converted to C7-C11 2-ketoacids, and the novel phenylpyruvate decarboxylase converts the C7-C11 2-ketoacid to a C6-C10 aldehyde having one less carbon than the 2-ketoacid. Ultimately, through contact with additional enzymes, such C6-C10 aldehydes may be converted to, for example, C6-C10 alcohols, C6-C10 carboxylic acids, C6-C10 alkanes, and other derivatives. Use of the novel genetically modified phenylpyruvate de carboxylases may represent a lower cost alternative to non-biobased approaches.

Abstract: Provided herein are methods for producing ketone(s) from the condensation of methyl ketone(s) and alcohol(s) in the presence of an amine catalyst and a metal catalyst. Such amine catalysts may be supported, for example, on a silica-alumina support. Such ketones may be suitable for use in producing fuels, gasoline additives, and/or lubricants, or precursors thereof. The methyl ketone(s) and/or alcohol(s) may be obtained from renewable sources, such as by fermentation of biomass.

Abstract: Processes for the production of hydrocarbons from a renewable feedstock in which the renewable feedstock is partially hydrogenated prior to being deoxygenated. The partially hydrogenation utilizes a lower pressure, lower purity or both hydrogen gas compared to the deoxygenation. The partially hydrogenated product may be stored in containers and transported to be deoxygenated. Prior to partially hydrogenation, the feedstock may be pretreated. After deoxygenation an isomerization zone may be used to increase the cold flow properties for a diesel fuel.
