Abstract: Apparatus and associated methods relate to a system for detecting foreign object debris ingested into an aircraft engine. The system detects such foreign object debris by projecting a beam of light over an inlet of the aircraft engine. When foreign object debris is ingested into the aircraft engine, it intercepts the beam of light and scatters a back-scattered portion of the intercepted beam of light. An optical detector is configured to detect the back-scattered portion of the intercepted beam of light. A processor is configured to determine whether foreign object debris is ingested by the aircraft engine based on a comparison of a threshold value with a signal indicative of the back-scattered portion generated by the optical detector.

Abstract: An acoustic air data system includes first and second acoustic transmitters, an array of acoustic receivers, and control circuitry. The array is positioned to receive first and second acoustic signals. The control circuitry determines time difference of arrival (TDOA) of the first and second acoustic signals. The control circuitry determines, for each of a first and second set of acoustic receiver pairs, a signal velocity of the first and second acoustic signals, respectively, based on a distance between an inner acoustic receiver and an outer acoustic receiver and a corresponding TDOA for each pair of acoustic receivers. The control circuitry estimates one or more of wind angle, speed of sound, Mach number, and true airspeed of the airflow about the exterior of the vehicle based on parameters of a best fit circle.

Abstract: An acoustic air data sensor for an aircraft includes an acoustic transmitter, an acoustic receiver, an acoustic signal generator, timing circuitry, speed of sound determination circuity, and communication circuitry. The acoustic transmitter is located to transmit an acoustic signal through an airflow stagnation chamber that is pneumatically connected to an exterior of the aircraft and configured to receive and stagnate airflow from the exterior of the aircraft. The acoustic receiver is positioned at a distance from the acoustic transmitter to receive the acoustic signal. The pulse generator causes the acoustic transmitter to provide the acoustic signal. The timing circuitry determines a time of flight of the acoustic signal from the acoustic transmitter to the acoustic receiver. The speed of sound determination circuity determines, based on the time of flight and the distance, a speed of sound through air in the stagnation chamber. The communication circuitry outputs the speed of sound.

Abstract: A sensor includes a mount arranged along a sensor axis, an airfoil body fixed to the mount and having a first face and second face extending along the sensor axis, a heater element, and a temperature probe. The heater element and the temperature probe are positioned within the airfoil body and extend axially along the airfoil body. The airfoil body defines within its interior a pressure channel having an inlet segment extending between the heater element and the first face of the airfoil body to prevent ice formation and/or melt ice entrained within air traversing the pressure channel. Gas turbine engines, methods of removing ice or preventing ice formation, and methods of making sensors are also described.

Abstract: A probe system includes a heater and a control circuit. The heater includes a resistive heating element routed through the probe. An operational voltage is provided to the resistive heating element to provide heating for the probe. The control circuit is configured to provide a test voltage different than the operational voltage and monitor a test current generated in the resistive heating element while providing the test voltage. The control circuit is further configured to detect micro fractures in the resistive heating element based on the test current.

Abstract: An air data probe includes a probe body including a probe wall. The probe body is formed from a first material by direct energy metal deposition. An insert is positioned in the probe wall. The insert is formed from a second material different from the first material. The insert is encapsulated in the probe wall via the direct energy metal deposition. A method of forming an air data probe includes forming one or more thermally conductive inserts, and encapsulating the one or more inserts into a wall of an air data probe via direct energy metal deposition. The air data probe is formed from a first material and the one or more inserts are formed from a second material different from the first material.

Abstract: A pressure sensor includes a MEMS pressure transducer with a pressure sensing diaphragm and sensor elements, an isolator diaphragm spaced apart from the pressure sensing diaphragm, and a ceramic header body. The ceramic header body has an electrical conductor and transducer aperture with the MEMS pressure transducer supported therein. The isolator diaphragm is coupled to the to the MEMS pressure transducer by a fluid and is sealably fixed to the ceramic body. The ceramic header body bounds the fluid and the electrical conductor electrically connects the MEMS pressure transducer with the external environment. Differential pressure sensors and methods of making pressure sensors are also described.
