Abstract: Disclosed is an electrostatic coating device and method employing highly charged particles that are charged remote from the articles to be coated and then delivered to an area where they are to be applied by conveying them in a moving air stream. The movement is stopped by closing off the air stream, suspending the particles in space. Thereafter the particles are applied to an article by electrostatics. Special components are a powder entraining device which uses air fed at the bottom to erode the powder, feeds additional air from above and removes entrained powder from below; a charging device using the reaction of two converging opposed vortexes to oscillate the powder turbulently through an isolated high voltage electrical zone; and a multiple valve that feeds the charged powder to a can and vents the can, then isolates the can, bypassing the powder.

Abstract: A method of coating an article comprising passing a coating material adjacent to a plurality of conductors connected to a high voltage source whereby to electrostatically charge the material and wherein each of the conductors is connected to said source through an impedance adapted to resist reduction of charge on a conductor relatively remote from an articles to be coated in consequence of reduction of charge on a conductor relatively adjacent to said article to be coated. The coating material may be supplied from a powder dispensing and metering device comprising a powder reservoir, a rotor mounted for rotation at the base of the reservoir and an air inlet adjacent the rotor through which air is drawn in use to mix with powder during rotation of the rotor to draw a powder-air mixture away from the reservoir.

Abstract: An improved electrostatic powder painting apparatus is described herein, in which in the vicinity of a discharge electrode disposed in opposition to a body to be painted there is separately provided a driving electrode, for establishment of a driving electric field. The generation of a mono-polar ion current is achieved by said discharge electrode, so that the driving electric field and the ion current density may be controlled quite independently of each other, whereby generation of inverse ionization can be prevented perfectly, while a maximum amount of electric charge can be given to paint powders and a maximum driving force is acted upon said paint powders.

Abstract: Disclosed is a valve that has a torpedo shaped valving member in the middle of an enlarged passageway. The valving member contains an elastomeric sleeve that expands outwardly from a hinged area when compressed to form a line seal with the passageway. The valve is in the form of a multiple valve-feeding, bypass and venting valving units all in one dielectric casting. Means are also shown for connecting cans to the valve and for electrically charging powder. A method for valving and the diaphragm's details are also disclosed.

Abstract: A coating system for efficient electrical precipitation of powder to articles. Articles are conveyed through a coating chamber where they are coated with a powder. Electrogasdynamic guns direct a cloud of charged particles into the coating chamber. Dilution air moves the cloud through the chamber with the articles. As the cloud moves with the articles, the charged particles precipitate to the articles. An exhaust section draws off the dilution air as the coated articles leave the chamber. Electrically conductive articles may be grounded through the conveyor system to provide a discharge path from the charged particles. For nonconducting or hard to ground articles, a precharge section places on the articles an initial charge of opposite polarity from the charged particles. A powder feed using a cylinder and piston arrangement to contain fluidized powder supplies a uniform powder suspension to the guns.

Abstract: Apparatus and method for electrostatically depositing a layer of particulate material on a substrate surface from a gaseous suspension of particulate, thermoplastic material. Classifying means removes oversized particles from a supply of particulate, thermoplastic material and feeds properly-sized particulate material to a metering feed device. A pressure responsive sensing means is associated with the metering feed device, and energizes a control circuit associated with the classifying means to direct properly-sized particulate material from the classifying means into the metering feed device to maintain a substantially constant, predetermined amount of properly-sized particulate material in the metering feed device. The metering feed device feeds the properly-sized particulate material at a controlled volumetric rate into a gaseous medium to form a gaseous suspension of properly-sized particulate, thermoplastic material which is directed through a plurality of electrically charged spray means onto a substrate surface. The metering feed device includes a housing having a hopper section for receiving particulate material from the classifying means, and an elongate trough section in communication with the hopper section through a gate means. The trough section is divided into separate elongate channels by elongate, transversely spaced partition means which extend for substantially the entire elongate extent of the trough section. Each spray means includes a spray nozzle having an elongate passage terminating at a downstream end in an exit orifice, and a deflector fan positioned downstream of, and in overlying relationship with the exit orifice. Each spray nozzle has an inlet port in a side wall, and an elongate, tapered baffle overlies the inlet port for mixing a gaseous suspension of particulate material entering the spray nozzles through a conduit which is in communication with the inlet port of the spray nozzle and one channel of the metering feed device. Each spray nozzle further includes a discharge outlet chamber downstream of the baffle to confine the flow pattern of the gaseous suspension of particulate material as the gaseous suspension travels through the discharge outlet chamber and out of the exit orifice. The deflector fan associated with each spray nozzle deflects the gaseous suspension of particulate material onto the substrate surface in an elliptical pattern having its major axis disposed substantially transverse to the direction of elongation of the elongate passage. The spray nozzles are mounted on a belt which is movable along a path defining a closed loop having spaced, linear runs which traverse past the substrate surface upon which a layer of particulate material is to be formed. The metering feed device is supported on a rotatable platform, and drive means rotates the belt supporting the metering feed device at a synchronized speed to prevent twisting of delivery conduits which are in communication with the metering feed device and the spray nozzles.

Abstract: An improved electrostatic spray gun for the deposition of powdered coating material on a workpiece is disclosed. The spray gun includes a housing having a barrel to which a nozzle is attached for directing the powdered material to the workpiece. A charging electrode, which is connected to a high voltage power supply, is mounted on a diffuser assembly which is clamped between the nozzle and the housing, on which the nozzle is threaded. A regulated gas flow supplied through the housing and the diffuser assembly provides a gas shield around the charging electrode to prevent a buildup of the coating material on the electrode. A novel pneumatic safety interlock continuously monitors the pressure of the gas supplied to the diffuser assembly. The interlock turns off the high voltage power supply and a pump for the coating material in response to a drop in such pressure resulting from a loose nozzle.

Abstract: An electrostatic powder spraying apparatus that includes a nonrotating disk-like member having an edge; the electrostatic field extends between the edge of disk and articles to be coated. A first means of the apparatus deflects powder radially outwardly into a chamber. The chamber is adjacent the first means and provides space in which tangential streams impart a spiral motion or whirling cyclone-type motion to the radially deflected powder. An apertured means is spaced from the non-rotating disk-like member. The spiral motion of entrained powder moves it outwardly along the surface of the non-rotating disk-like member and causes air to be aspirated through the aperture to mix with the powder moving radially outwardly along the surface of the disk-like member. By this means the powder is given sufficient momentum to be ejected from the edge of the disk to the vicinity of an article at a powder attracting potential where the electrostatic field forces can guide the charged powder to the article.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for electrostatically applying solid particles to an article employs a nozzle forming the solid particles into a pattern and directing them at the article, preferably in a relatively flat, fanlike spray. The forward portion of the nozzle is formed of insulating material and includes an ionizing electrode. An electrostatic field is established between the article and an electrode that creates a single highly ionized zone offset from and rearwardly of the spray. The percentage of solid particles which are sprayed but remain undeposited is reduced using this method and apparatus.
