Abstract:
The present invention relates to novel compositions that contain a base oil and certain substituted fullerenes effective to improve the cold flow properties of the base oil. Typically the substituted fullerenes have the general formula:C.sub.Fn (GR.sub.y).sub.xIn the formula C.sub.Fn is a fullerene or mixture of fullerenes, n is the number of carbon atoms in the fullerene, x is an integer from 1 up to the maximum number of sites on the fullerene molecule available for adding substituent groups, G is a linking group that may be absent or present, and when present is an oxygen, sulfur, nitrogen, phenol, aniline, Mannich base or diazocarboxylate-derived group, y is an integer determined by the identity of G and equals 1 when G is absent or when present and selected from the group consisting of oxygen, sulfur and diazocarboxylate-derived linking groups, and equals 1 or 2 when G is a phenol or aniline linking group, and equals 2 when G is a nitrogen linking group, and when y equals 1 R is a substituted or unsubstituted hydrocarbyl group and when y equals 2 at most one R may be hydrogen while the remainder are hydrocarbyl groups, and the R group may be the same or different, and wherein when x is greater than 1 the GR.sub.y may be the same or different and at most one R may be hydrogen. Preferred are substituted fullerenes that are alkylamino-substituted fullerenes. The compositions are useful as flow-improvers properties.
Abstract:
A method has been developed to solubilize hydroxy S-triazines containing at least one hydroxy function in diesel fuel and to enhance their overall thermal stability. The products which result from the full or partial encapsulation of hydroxy-S-triazine with calix[8]arene have unique and novel properties and reduce or eliminate nitrogen oxides level in diesel fuel.
Abstract:
Additives of improving the low temperature flow properties and oxidative stability of hydrocarbon oils are disclosed, which comprise the alkylation of a phenol in the presence of a polar aprotic cosolvent to produce an essentially linear alkylated phenol which is condensed with an aldehyde to produce the low temperature flow improver wherein:(a) the polymer composition has a number average molecular weight of at least about 3,000 and a molecular weight distribution of at least about 1.5;(b) in the alkylated phenol reactant the alkyl groups (i) are essentially linear; (ii) have between 6 and 50 carbon atoms; and (iii) have an average number of carbon atoms between about 12 and 26; and(c) not more than about 10 mole percent of the alkyl groups on the alkylated phenol have less than 12 carbon atoms and not more than about 10 mole percent of the alkyl groups on the alkylated phenol have more than 26 carbon atoms. The additives may also be produced in a branched backbone form in which monomer reactants are copolymerized with certain tri- or tetrafunctional comonomers. Blends of these additives with various hydrocarbon oils, and particularly various middle distillates and lubricating oil compositions, whose low temperature flow properties and oxidative stability are significantly improved thereby, are also disclosed.

Abstract:
Compositions made by reacting (I) a metal phenoxide salt of a bridged phenol of 2 to about 20 phenol groups and (II) a carboxylic acid reagent containing from one to three carboxyl-based groups and a halogen-substituted hydrocarbon-based aliphatic or alicyclic group containing a halogen atom are useful as additives for lubricants and normally liquid fuels. Analogous thiophenoxide-based compositions are similarly useful. These compositions can also be used as intermediates for the preparation of other useful additive compositions through their reaction with alcohols, amino compounds, reactive small ring heterocycles and basically reacting metal compounds.
