Abstract:
A valve operating system for an internal combustion engine including a main valve lifter, a subsidiary valve lifter, a low-speed cam operating the main valve lifter, a high-speed cam operating the subsidiary valve lifter, a connecting device switched over between a non-connecting state in which the valve lifters are disconnected from each other, and a connecting state in which the valve lifters are connected to each other, a valve spring for biasing the valve in a closing direction, a lifter spring for biasing the subsidiary valve lifter toward the cam; thus, in a low-speed mode, that is non-connected states, an influence of a load of the lifter spring on the valve can be prevented, and in a high-speed mode, that is connected states, a sum total of loads of the valve spring and the lifter spring cap be applied to both of the valve lifters to improve the closing responsiveness of the valve.
Abstract:
A control device for a spark-ignition engine, in which a mixture in a combustion chamber is fired by compression ignition in a part-load range under warm-running conditions, includes an EGR controller incorporating a valve operation controller for controlling internal EGR of hot burned gas and a cold EGR controller for controlling external EGR of cold burned gas. The EGR controller performs EGR control operation to leave the hot EGR gas in the combustion chamber in a lower-load, lower-speed region within a compression ignition combustion range and to introduce the cold EGR gas into the combustion chamber in a higher-load, higher-speed region within the compression ignition combustion range. The control device further includes a firing assist unit for inducing the compression ignition at least when ignitability of the mixture decreases due to introduction of the cold EGR gas in the compression ignition combustion range.
Abstract:
A slidably movable member such as an adjusting shim used in a valve operating mechanism of an internal combustion engine of an automotive vehicle. The slidably movable member is used in contact with lubricating oil and comprises a substrate. A hard carbon-based film is coated on a surface of the substrate. The hard carbon-based film has a surface section which contains at least one of nitrogen and oxygen in an amount ranging from 0.5 to 30 at % and/or hydrogen in an amount of not more than 10 at %.
Abstract:
A connectable bucket tappet having a ring shaped section and avoiding a receiving element for a coupling device which was previously joined thereto in a single piece. A separate, sleeve-shaped component is arranged near the base of the ring shaped section. The component is used for sectionally accommodating a slider for coupling the ring shaped section to a central circular section.
Abstract:
To provide an internal combustion engine that can generate a strong swirl by increasing the amount of intake air for generating the swirl in a simple structure. In the internal combustion engine provided with a cylinder head formed with an air intake port having first and second ports, when a second intake valve for opening and closing the second port is brought into a halted state by a valve halting mechanism, a swirl is generated by intake air flowing through the first port in a combustion chamber. At a first inlet slot, the line of intersection between a first plane, which is a plan including the first inlet slot and a first orthogonal plane inclines upwardly as it approaches from the position near the outer periphery of the combustion chamber towards a second reference plane, and the first port includes a port section having a passage shape which extends substantially along a perpendicular line orthogonal to a first plane from the first inlet slot towards the upstream by a predetermined length of the passage in a plan view.
Abstract:
A variable valve gear particularly for internal combustion engines, in which a control cam of a camshaft acts, by way of pair of swivellably coupled levers, to a valve to produce an adjustment of the valve stroke. The valve stoke can vary continuously from a maximum lift to zero lift while the valve clearance can remain unchanged.
Abstract:
A lash adjuster is provided which can keep a constant valve lifting amount. An adjust screw is brought into threaded engagement in a threaded hole formed in the bottom surface of an end plate of a lifter body. The adjust screw is biased in the axial direction by an elastic member. The threads of female threads of the threaded hole and the male threads on the adjust screw are serrated. The surface roughness of the pressure flanks of the serrated threads is set to 0.4 or over to prevent the adjust screw from retracting while turning when push-in loads are applied to the adjust screw from the valve stem, thereby stabilizing the valve lifting amount. Also, a slide member is mounted between the adjust screw and the valve stem and a retaining device is provided to prevent the slide member from turning relative to the nut member while supporting it so as to be movable in the axial direction.
Abstract:
To provide a high performance four-stroke internal combustion engine wherein an increase in a side of a cylinder head is prevented and a valve resting mechanism is provided for a valve lifter. In a four-stroke internal combustion engine with a valve resting mechanism includes a valve lifter having a valve resting mechanism interposed between a valve motion cam and a stem of a poppet valve and a valve lifter spring is provided for biasing the valve lifter in a direction in which the valve lifter is normally held in contact with the valve motion cam. A slide pin holder is pressed against the valve lifter by a spring force of the valve lifter spring that is provided on the valve lifter while a shim portion having a predetermined thickness for controlling a relative positional relationship with the valve lifter is formed integrally with a valve lifter top wall. One of a plurality of predetermined valve lifters most suitable for the relative positional relationship between the slide pin holder and the valve lifter is selectively mounted to effect a tappet gap adjustment.
Abstract:
A variable cam engine with an intake valve, including a first cam shaped to allow an increased intake valve lift and an increased intake valve duration, a second cam shaped to allow a reduced intake valve lift and a reduced intake valve duration, a cam switching mechanism for switching between the first and second cams depending on an engine speed and an engine load, and a control unit programmed to substantially equalize amounts of intake air flowing into the engine before and after switching from the first cam to the second cam, and programmed to determine a first ignition timing when the second cam is operated and a second ignition timing when the first cam is operated, and advance the first ignition timing relative to the second ignition timing upon switching from the first cam to the second cam.
Abstract:
A tappet is used in a valve-operating mechanism of an internal combustion engine. The tappet has a top wall and the upper surface of the top wall is engaged with a cam. The lower surface is engaged on a poppet valve which moves up and down. A downward projection which has a recess for storing lubricating oil is formed in the middle of the lower surface of the top wall of the tappet, thereby lubricating interfaces with the cam or valve to improve frictional or wear resistance.
