Abstract: To improve fuel efficiency, some gasoline engines are equipped with valve deactivators in some of the cylinders so that at low torque conditions only a subset of the total number of cylinders are active. In prior art engines, particularly when they have four valves per cylinder, space is tight. It is known to provide a cam carrier in the head between the cylinder head and the camshaft. The cylinder head bolts pass through the head under the cam carrier. According to the present disclosure, the cam carrier, and its associated disadvantages, is obviated by widening the bearings for the camshafts, using smaller diameter head bolts, and putting the orifices tor the head bolts directly through the bearings.

Abstract: An exhaust valve for an internal combustion engine comprises a valve disc having a first side (14) and a second side (16), a valve stem extending from the first side of the valve disc, and an annular valve seat area (11) located at the first side of the valve disc. The annular valve seat area (11) is of a nickel-base alloy or a chromium-base alloy and has a valve seat surface. The annular valve seat area has at least a first annular portion (43) located in between two second annular portions (42). The first annular portion has lower hardness than the two second annular portions.

Abstract: A monolithic rocker arm component includes a first lateral wall defining a first aperture and a first mass reducing feature, an opposing second wall defining a second aperture and a second mass reducing feature, a pushrod receiving member that bridges the first lateral wall and the second lateral wall at a first end of the rocker arm, and a tongue element that bridges the first lateral wall and the second lateral wall at a second end of the rocker arm. The pushrod receiving member routes oil from the first towards the second end. The monolithic rocker arm may have one or more internal regions having lattice structures. Methods for additive manufacturing the monolithic rocker component are also provided.

Abstract: An electric variable valve timing apparatus includes a sprocket unit and an electric motor. The electric motor is fixed to a chain cover with bolts. The chain cover includes plural bosses each having an internal thread to which one of the bolts is threaded. The bosses extend from the chain cover toward the sprocket unit to positions at which the bosses face an outer periphery of the sprocket unit in a radial direction. The bosses are arranged such that, when the sprocket unit moves downward from an attaching position, at which the sprocket unit is attached to the camshaft, at least two bosses are engaged with the sprocket unit to restrict downward movement of the sprocket unit, and that the sprocket unit is allowed to move between a location outside of a space covered by the chain cover and the attaching position.

Abstract: A camshaft phaser including a locking clearance setting pin is provided. The camshaft phaser includes a stator including a first plurality of pin holes extending axially in at least one of the radially inwardly extending lobes arranged along an arcuate path. A locking cover engages against a first axial end face of the stator and includes a locking pin bore and a second plurality of pin holes arranged along the arcuate path and angularly spaced apart from one another by a different angular spacing than the first plurality of pin holes. A pin extends through a respective one of the first plurality of pin holes and a corresponding one of the second plurality of pin holes, such that a location of the pin sets an angular adjustment of the locking pin bore relative to the stator.

Abstract: A cover has an aperture through which an accessory gains access to the interior side of the cover and a cavity. The accessory may be any kind of sensor or actuator. To secure the accessory to the cover, an adapter coupled to the cover is provided. In one example, the adapter has a cylindrical connection section that is spin welded into place in the cavity. In another example, the adapter has self-tapping threads that engage with the surface surrounding the cavity. The adapter also has tabs extending outwardly from the cover, the tabs having a proximate section and an engagement section. The accessory has a retaining orifice that couples with the tabs in a snap-fit relationship to secure the accessory to the cover.
