Abstract: A decompression device is attached to an exhaust camshaft, and the exhaust camshaft is supported by a cylinder head. The decompression device includes a decompression camshaft formed with a decompression cam that can protrude and be immersed with respect to a base circle of an exhaust cam of the exhaust camshaft, a decompression arm that moves in an opening direction due to centrifugal force accompanying rotation of the exhaust camshaft to protrude the decompression cam, and a spring that moves the decompression arm in a closing direction by spring force resisting the centrifugal force to immerse the decompression cam. In the decompression device, the opening direction of the decompression arm can be changed in a same direction or in an opposite direction to a rotation direction of the exhaust camshaft for each cylinder.

Abstract: A valve assembly includes a valve body defining a bore therein, a valve stem, a spring retainer, a valve spring, and a detent mechanism. The valve stem extends through the bore in the valve body and is adjustable between an open position and a closed position. The spring retainer is spaced apart from the valve body along a longitudinal axis of the valve stem and fixed relative to the valve body. The spring retainer defines a bore through which the valve stem extends. The valve spring is captured between the valve body and the spring retainer and is configured to apply a biasing force to the valve stem that biases the valve stem toward the closed position. The detent mechanism is configured to increase the biasing force applied to the valve stem when the valve stem is in the closed position or within a predetermined distance of the closed position.

Abstract: An improved cam follower for a vehicle engine includes a body, a spring seat, a tower, a spring and an anti-rotation member. The body defines a body diameter, a first open end, and a second end. The spring seat includes a spring seat opening and an interlock portion. The spring seat may be affixed to the first open end of the body. The spring seat further includes a spring seat diameter wherein the spring seat diameter is greater than the body diameter. The tower may be disposed in a pin housing through the spring seat opening at the first open end of the body. The tower further includes an upper flange and a spring which abuts the upper flange at a first spring end. The second spring end abuts the spring seat. The anti-rotation member accordingly may be coupled to the body via the spring seat.

Abstract: Reciprocating apparatuses such as a displacer in a Stirling engine or Vuilleumier (thermally-driven) heat pump and such as a poppet valve in an internal combustion engine have been known to be built with a mechatronic actuator. The reciprocating element has two springs in compression biased against each other. It has been found that conventional springs in compression introduce losses. A spring is disclosed in which a portion of the coil is wound in a clockwise direction and a portion is wound in a clockwise direction. Also, in reciprocation, the spring is in compression at one end of travel and in tension at the other end of travel.

Abstract: Systems and methods for operating exhaust valves of an internal combustion engine with poppet exhaust valves are described. The systems and methods provide for locking exhaust valves in a closed state when the exhaust valves are in mechanical communication with a base circle of a camshaft lobe. Locking the exhaust valves in a closed state may reduce the possibility of exhaust pressures opening the exhaust valves at times they may not be desired to be open.

The control system includes a cam phase actuator having first and second actuator ports to adjust a rotational phase of a camshaft relative to a crankshaft, a first control valve, a second control valve, and a dynamic regeneration valve. In one embodiment, the dynamic regeneration valve is configured to enable the cam phase actuator to switch between operating in an oil pressure actuated mode and a cam torque actuated mode when adjusting the rotational phase of the camshaft relative to the crankshaft.
