Abstract: A paint sprayer is disposed substantially on the axis of an almost closed (omega-shaped) loop formed by a transporter. Its axis of rotation is aligned so that the area in which the sheet of atomized paint it produces intersects the cylinder defined by the axes of the objects to be painted lies in an area contained between but reaching as far as circles delimiting the part-cyclindrical surface over which the objects move. An annular nozzle connected to a source of pressurized gas is disposed behind a rotating bowl of the sprayer so that an annular gas jet is directed onto the initial part of the thin sheet of atomized paint. The pressure of the gas fed to this nozzle is modulated periodically so that the aforementioned intersection area reaches the delimiting circles alternately and periodically.

Abstract: An electrostatically charged rotary paint atomizing device used in electrostatically coating an article with a smooth homogeneous film of paint and without the generation of foam or other surface irregularities on the article being coated, wherein an electrostatic field is established between the peripheral edge of the rotating atomizing device and the article to be coated and the liquid paint flows toward the edge of the atomizing device as a continuous thin film, which film is formed into a circumferential series of branch flows of narrow width flowing in the peripheral direction of the atomizing edge, and the liquid paint is atomized from the series of branch flows as they are projected beyond the edge of the atomizing device. Abstract: Material comprising particulate matter is atomized and coated on a surface of an object by delivering the material to a surface of a spinning atomizer from a non-rotating delivery means preferably situated within the volume defined by the atomizer. The material is atomized by being thrust from the atomizer surface and at least a portion of the atomized material impacts the surface being coated. The method is particularly applicable to coating surfaces wherein abrasive material is atomized, since a seal between the non-rotating delivery means and atomizer is not needed, and wherein space limitations are imposed on the configuration of the atomizer. Further, a potential difference may be established between the atomized material and surface to be coated whereby an axial flow of material from the surface of the atomizer may be effected.

Abstract: An electrostatic crop spraying apparatus is arranged so that spray is ejected from the nozzle directly towards the crop, either vertically downwards or at an angle intermediate between the horizontal and the vertical. With respect to the vertical, the spray liquid is fed to the upper surface of a rotatable disc from which it is centrifugally distributed on to the inner surface of a rotatable hollow cone coaxial with the disc. The truncated apex of the cone is uppermost and the liquid is atomized on ejection from the lower circumferential edge of the cone. Charging of the spray is produced at the surface of the disc or of the cone by means of an electrode which maintains an ionized air path to the surface over a distance of a few mm. The current flow for an electrode potential in the range 15 to 30kV is a few .mu.A. A pump may be used to supply liquid to the nozzle in a pulsed flow.
