Abstract: A piston and cylinder assembly includes a housing defining a bore. A piston is sized to reciprocate in the bore. A first sealing member provides a sealing engagement between the piston and a wall of the bore. A first bushing, of a first material, is around a first portion of the piston toward a first end of the piston. A second bushing, of a second material, is around a second portion of the piston toward a second end of the piston. The first and second bushings guide the piston within the bore. The first material is different than the second material.

Abstract: In one aspect of the present invention, a compressor system includes a compressor shaft for generating compressed air, a clutch that, when engaged, transfers power from a vehicle engine to drive the compressor shaft and that, when disengaged, does not transfers power from the vehicle engine to drive the compressor shaft. An electric motor that, when activated, drives the compressor shaft. A control module that sets the compressor into one of at least three modes of operation as a function of respective statuses of various vehicle components. The compressor shaft is driven by both the clutch and the electric motor during at least one of the modes.

Abstract: A vehicle air compressor controller includes a compressor electronic control unit receiving a plurality of signals representing respective vehicle parameters. A variable torque transmitter is controlled by the compressor electronic control unit. The variable torque transmitter receives an engine speed from an engine of the vehicle and delivers a variable torque to a compressor of the vehicle for controlling a speed of the compressor. The variable torque is determined as a function of the engine speed and the vehicle parameters.
