Abstract: Curable adhesive films, primers for adhesion of curable adhesive films, and adhesive systems comprising adhesive films and primers are provided. In some embodiments, an adhesive system comprises: I) a curable adhesive free-standing film comprising a blend of: a) a first film-forming polymer or oligomer; b) a first species comprising first unsaturated free-radically polymerizable groups, which may be a) or a species other than a); and c) a first transition metal cation; and II) a primer for adhesion of a curable adhesive free-standing film to a first substrate comprising an oxidizing agent. In some embodiments, an adhesive system comprises: I) a curable adhesive free-standing film comprising an outer surface bearing embossed air bleed channels capable of aiding in escape of air during application of the outer surface to a primed substrate; and II) a primer comprising components that initiate cure of the curable adhesive free-standing film.

Abstract: The composition includes a first amino-functional silane including an amino group and a silane group, in which the amino group and the silane group are connected by an organic linking group, and a second amino-functional silane including a secondary or tertiary amino group and least two independently selected silane groups, in which the secondary or tertiary amino group is connected to each of the two independently selected silane groups by organic linking groups. The first amino-functional silane can be a polyamino-functional silane having at least two amino groups and a silane group in which at least one of the amino groups and the silane group are connected by an organic linking group. The composition can include a photoluminescent compound exhibiting photoluminescence at an excitation wavelength above 400 nanometers. Use of the composition as an adhesion promoter and a method including applying the composition to a substrate surface are also disclosed.

Abstract: An article comprises a substrate having a first portion comprising at least one of a metal or a ceramic metal oxide. A composite foam is bonded to the metal or ceramic metal oxide. The composite foam comprises: at least one polymer preparable by ring-opening metathesis polymerization; at least one catalyst for the ring-opening metathesis polymerization; at least one difunctional coupling agent represented by Z—X—Z. Each Z independently represents a group that is chemically reactive with at least one of the chemically bound surface hydroxyl groups thereby forming at least one covalent bond. Each X independently represents a divalent organic linking group having a number average molecular weight of 500 to 10000 grams per mole; and at least one of hollow glass microspheres or expanded polymeric microspheres. A method of making the article is also disclosed.

Abstract: An adhesive composition is described comprising unpolymerized cyclic olefin, a ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) catalyst or precatalyst thereof, and one or more adhesion promoter polymers. In one embodiment, the adhesion promoter is a polyolefin comprising maleic anhydride or silicon-containing moieties. In one embodiment, a combination of at least one polymeric polyisocyanate and at least one polyolefin comprising maleic anhydride or silicon-containing moieties provides a synergistic improvement. In another embodiment, a polymeric polyisocyanate adhesion promoter comprising oxygen atoms in the backbone has been found useful for bonding substrates such as polyamide, polyether ether ketone, or polyether imide. Also described are methods of bonding a substrate and articles, such as an electric battery cold plate assembly.

Abstract: A method of disposing an adhesive composition onto a first surface of a first substrate comprises: a) disposing a photoactivatable adhesive precursor composition onto at least a portion of the first surface of the first substrate according to a predetermined pattern, and b) exposing the photoactivatable adhesive precursor composition to actinic electromagnetic radiation, thereby providing an adhesive precursor composition that spontaneously cures to provide the adhesive composition. The photoactivatable adhesive precursor composition comprises: at least one free-radically polymerizable compound and a photoactivatable redox initiation system comprising: (i) at least one photoactivatable reducing agent precursor; (ii) at least one transition metal compound comprising at least one metal selected from groups 5 to 11 in the Periodic Table of the Elements; (iii) optional organic peroxide; and (iv) optional quaternary ammonium halide. An article preparable according to the method is also disclosed.

Abstract: Curable sealant compositions comprise the components: a) x weight percent of at least one polythiol; b) y weight percent of at least one unsaturated compound having at least two non-aromatic carbon-carbon double bonds, at least one carbon-carbon triple bond, or a combination thereof; c) from 0.01 to 8 weight percent of at least one quaternary ammonium or phosphonium salt; d) from 0.05 to 10 weight percent of at least one organic peroxide; and e) optionally from 0.01 to 10 weight percent of a photoinitiator system capable of generating free radicals upon exposure to actinic radiation. Each of x and y represents a positive real number. The sum x+y is in the range of 72 to 99. The weight percent ranges of the components a)-e) are based on the total weight of the components a)-e). A seal cap including the curable sealant composition and methods of making and using the curable sealant compositions are also disclosed.
