Abstract:
The invention relates to a method for transmitting and a method for reconstructing channel quality information in a communication system. Further, the invention also provides a transmitter and receiver performing these methods, respectively. The invention suggests a scheme for communicating channel quality measures that on the one hand allows for an accurate reconstruction of the channel quality measures at the receiver and on the other hand requires an acceptable transmission overhead. This is achieved by partitioning channel quality measures into at least two partitions and to compress the values partition-wise, for example by means of a discrete cosine transform and the transmission of only a subset of the resulting coefficients.
Abstract:
A hybrid ARQ retransmission method involves encoding data packets with a forward error correction (FEC) technique prior to transmission. The data packets are retransmitted based on an automatic repeat request and subsequently soft-combined with previously received erroneous data packets either on a symbol-by-symbol or a bit-by-bit basis. The symbols of the erroneous data packets are modulated by employing a first signal constellation. The symbols of the retransmitted data packets are modulated by employing at least a second signal constellation. Each symbol bit has a mean bit reliability defined by the individual bit reliabilities over all symbols of the predetermined signal constellation. The first constellation and the at least second signal constellation are selected such that the combined mean bit reliabilities for the respective bits of all transmissions are averaged out.

Abstract:
A transmission apparatus for transmitting data has a table that includes a plurality of constellation versions for a 64 QAM modulation scheme. Each of the constellation versions defines at least one of (i) bit positions in a bit sequence and (ii) logical values of bits of the bit sequence. A transmission section transmits data using one of the constellation versions based on the table.

Abstract:
A method and apparatus for modulating a data signal for transmission over a channel of a communication system, wherein a direct modulation scheme is applied to a data signal over a given first signal interval. Subsequently, a control measure is determined for switching the modulation scheme for the data signal from the direct modulation scheme to a differential modulation scheme and/or vice versa, which is applied to the data signal over a given second signal interval.
Abstract:
The invention provides a hybrid ARQ technique for transmitting a data unit on a radio channel in a communication system to a receiver. After encoding the data unit into a sequence of code words using an encoding parameter, a first code word is transmitted, and an ACK or NAK is received from the receiver. If a NAK is received, the next code word of the sequence is transmitted. According to the invention, a measurement value indicating the current channel conditions is determined by counting the NAK messages and/or evaluating the encoding parameters. Preferably the measurement values are the overall coding rate, the average number of retransmissions per data unit, and the average number of retransmissions per code word. In the preferred embodiment, the transmitter comprises a NAK counter. Besides the improved transmission measurement, the present invention provides using this measurement for adaptation purposes.
