Abstract: An apparatus includes first circuitry configured to be implanted on or within a recipient's body and to apply stimulation signals to at least one muscle of a recipient and/or to at least one neuron configured to control the at least one muscle. The apparatus further includes second circuitry configured to be implanted on or within the recipient's body and configured to wirelessly receive electrical power from a power source external to the recipient's body and to provide at least a portion of the received electrical power to the first circuitry. The second circuitry includes a plurality of coils, each coil of the plurality of coils having at least one electrically conductive conduit encircling a center axis of the coil. The coils are configured to be implanted on or within the recipient's body with different orientations and/or positions relative to one another.

Abstract: An apparatus includes a transducer, a first element, and a second element configured to be at least partially implanted on or within a recipient. The transducer is in mechanical communication with a first portion of the recipient’s body, the first element is configured to be in mechanical communication with the transducer and includes an orifice having a first length and extending from a first surface of the first element to a second surface of the first element. The second element includes a first end and a second end with a second length therebetween, the second length longer than the first length. The second element is configured to extend through the orifice and, during implantation, to be slidably adjusted relative to the orifice and affixed to the first element such that the second end is in mechanical communication with a second portion of the recipient’s body.

Abstract: In a subcutaneous microphone used in medical devices, a structure is introduced that constrains the motion of the diaphragm during normal operation of the microphone. In one embodiment, a raised portion, such as a pole or pillar is placed in the chamber at the middle of the diaphragm. The raised portion may contact one or both of the bottom surface of the chamber and the underside of the membrane, and generally acts to reduce the amount of deflection experienced by the membrane.

Abstract: Operational modes or settings of a totally implantable cochlear implant can be adjusted or changed based on movement of an external element. Sensors in the totally implantable cochlear implant detect one of several positions of the external element as that element is moved near the implant. Depending on the position detected, one of a plurality of operational modes or settings can be selected.

Abstract: An apparatus includes a housing configured to be implanted beneath a portion of skin of a recipient and first circuitry within the housing. The first circuitry is configured to wirelessly communicate with second circuitry of an external device positioned on or above the portion of skin. The apparatus further includes an actuator within the housing and configured to be in mechanical communication with a portion of bone of the recipient. The actuator includes a unitary mass configured to undergo vibratory motion within the housing. The unitary mass includes a plurality of electrically conductive sub-masses in mechanical communication with one another and electrically isolated from one another.
