Abstract: Various propulsion motor topologies are provided. In particular, a propulsion motor is provided which includes: at least one ferromagnetic core having opposite ends joined by a body forming a magnetic flux pathway between the opposite ends; a magnetic flux inducing device to induce a first magnetic flux in the at least one ferromagnetic core along the magnetic flux pathway; and armature coils to induce a varying second magnetic flux in the at least one ferromagnetic core perpendicular to the magnetic flux pathway, to assist inducing a propulsion force perpendicular to the magnetic flux pathway. The at least one ferromagnetic core is shaped to form one or more total forces perpendicular to the propulsion force due to the first magnetic flux.

Abstract: A system (100), electromagnetic actuator (102) and track (101) for braking are provided. The actuator (102) includes pole portions (109) extending from back-iron portions. Respective longitudinal axes (104) of the pole portions (109) are arranged about parallel to one another and about perpendicular to a common movement axis (104). A pole pitch of the pole portions (109) is selected to induce eddy currents in a segmented track (101), such that the eddy currents are present in a skin depth at more than one surface of segments (105) of the segmented track (101) when the pole portions (109) are moving at given speeds. Eddy current generated losses occupy about an entirety of a volume of a segment (105) of the track (101) below a given intermediate speed, and the eddy current generated losses occupy at least one third of the volume of the segment (105) at a given maximum speed greater than the given intermediate speed. Individually controllable electrical windings are around respective pole portions (109).

Abstract: Replaceable windings (101) for an electromagnetic machine (100) are provided. A replaceable winding (101) comprises a body (107) having a longitudinal axis (105), the body (107) comprising opposing surfaces along the longitudinal axis (105). The replaceable winding (101) further comprises an aperture (119) through the body (107), between the opposing surfaces, the aperture (119) having generally parallel internal sides about perpendicular to the opposing surfaces of the body (107), the aperture (119) configured to removably received a pole portion (109) of the electromagnetic machine (100). The replaceable winding (101) further comprises electrical conductors wound about the aperture (119) in the body (107). The replaceable winding (101) further comprises electrical connectors (123) at one or more external sides of the body (107), the electrical connectors (123) connected to the electrical conductors.

Abstract: Various topologies to reduce force ripple for propulsion motors are provided. A propulsion motor comprises: ferro-magnetic cores arranged along a movement axis, the ferromagnetic cores including one or more end ferromagnetic cores located at an end of the movement axis, the one or more end ferromagnetic cores shaped to provide one or more of increasing magnetic permeance or decreasing magnetic reluctance from the end of the movement axis towards a center of the movement axis; armature coils located around the ferromagnetic cores; and at least one field coil around one or more of the armature coils and the ferromagnetic cores.

Abstract: A vehicle with offset propulsion motors is provided. The vehicle comprises: a body; and a plurality of propulsion motors at a side of the body, arranged in a line about parallel to a movement axis of the body. Displacements between adjacent propulsion motors along the movement axis are selected according to an electrical period of poles of the plurality of propulsion motors, and an offset distance. The offset distance is determined by dividing the electrical period into the offset distance to determine a remainder. The electrical period divided by the remainder is about equal to a number of the plurality of propulsion motors divided by a given integer value that is less than the number of the plurality of propulsion motors, and produces a largest common divider between the given integer value and the number of the plurality of propulsion motors of “1”.
