Abstract: A process for the application of an intumescent coating system to a substrate comprising (I) applying to a substrate an intumescent coating composition comprising i. an epoxy-based binder; ii. a curing agent; iii. an expansion agent; iv. an acid generating compound; and v. at least 5 wt. % water; and allowing said composition to cure to form an intumescent coating layer; (II) applying to a cured or partially cured intumescent coating layer, a top coat composition comprising an acrylic-based binder, a polyurethane binder or a silicone-based binder and at least 10 wt. % water so as to form a top coat layer.
