Abstract: Production of 1-amino-4-hydroxyanthraquinones, which can be substituted in the 2- and 3-positions by carboxylic acid, carboxylic ester or alkyl groups or chlorine or bromine, by heating 3'-nitrobenzoyl-benzoic acids, which can be substituted in the 4'- and 5'-positions, in sulfuric acid or oleum in the presence of boric acid, boric acid esters, boron trihalides or their complex compounds to temperatures between about 120 DEG and 200 DEG C. The reaction products are dyes or intermediates for valuable disperse dyes.

Abstract: Halobenzenes are manufactured by (a) a one-vessel reaction of anilines with halogenating agents to give haloanilines, followed by reaction of the mixture thus obtained with alkanols and nitrosylating agents in the presence of water and acid at not less than 35 DEG C. or (b) the corresponding reaction of a haloaniline which has been manufactured in the above manner or by some other method and has been isolated from its reaction mixture. The products are starting materials for the manufacture of drugs, dyes and pesticides.

Abstract: A process for the preparation of compounds of the formula I I where R is alkyl, by sulfonation, chlorination and nitration starting from an alkylbenzene, wherein the alkylbenzene is sulfonated with from 2.5 to 3, preferably from 2.65 to 2.75, moles of concentrated sulfuric acid per mole of alkylbenzene, the reaction product is then reacted with from about 1.1 to 1.3 moles of chlorine in the absence of a catalyst, the product is subsequently nitrated with highly concentrated nitric acid at elevated temperatures and the nitro compound is isolated.

Heading C2C. o-Aminobenzonitriles which may be substituted in the ring by one or two halogen atoms or aliphatic radicals are prepared by decomposing an isatin-#-oxime of the formula where R 1 and R 2 , which may be the same or different, each denotes a hydrogen or halogen atom or an aliphatic radical, in the presence of a basic compound e.g. alkali metal hydroxides, carbonates, alcoholates, carboxylates at a temperature in the range 130-200‹ C. In examples, 2-aminobenzonitrile and 5-chloro- (or 5-methyl)-2-aminobenzonitrile are prepared. Starting materials include 5-isobutyl-, 5,7-dibromo and 4-methyl-5-chloroisatin #-oxime.
