    Abstract: A process is described for the electrochemical cleavage of alkali metal sulphates into relatively highly concentrated solutions of alkali metal hydroxide and sulphuric acid by means of the use of a 3-compartment electrodialysis cell at temperatures of >/= 70 to equipped with an anion exchanger membrane, the polymeric ion exchanger matrix of which is composed of a styrene/divinylbenzene copolymer, having very highly basic quaternary ammonium groups, and a hydronium ion blocker, on the side of which facing the central chamber is located an anion exchanger layer or anion exchanger membrane having tertiary or secondary amino groups.

A process for the production of an electrode suitable for the reduction of oxygen and oxygen-containing compounds, in which (a) a carbon carrier is subjected to partial anodic oxidation in an aqueous mineral acid at a potential epsilon h of from 1.3 to + 10V, (b) the carbon carrier subjected to partial oxidation is subsequently impregnated and doped with molybdenum (VI) and/or tungsten (VI) and/or vanadium (V) compounds and (c) the doped carbon carrier is fixed with an iron, titanium and/or zirconium compound or with a dilute aqueous mineral acid, preferably from 0.1 to 3% strength by weight aqueous nitric acid or sulfuric acid or an alkali metal sulfate solution.
