    Abstract: Electrolysis cell comprises two monopolar electrodes and at least one intermediate bipolar electrode. The cell is undivided and the surface of the counter electrode comprises electrochemically active and inactive parts, such that the electrochemically active area of the counter electrode is a number of times smaller than the area of the working electrode. An electrolysis cell comprises two monopolar electrodes and at least one intermediate bipolar electrode. One monopolar electrode and the similarly charged portions of the bipolar electrodes together form the working electrode and the other monopolar electrode and the similarly charged portions of the bipolar electrodes together form the counterelectrode. The space between the counter and working electrodes is undivided. The surface of the counter electrode comprises electrochemically active and inactive parts. The sum of the electrochemically active parts of the counter electrode surface is a number of times smaller than the electrochemically active parts of the surface of the working electrode. An Independent claim is included for a process for the production of organic and inorganic compounds by reaction of the corresponding starting materials in the electrolysis cell.

    Abstract: The electrochemical methoxylation of aliphatic or alicyclic mono- or di-ethers in the alpha -position is carried out by solid electrolyte technology using as electrolysis liquid an organic solution with no conductive salts, containing methanol, starting ether (I) (at least 1 mol.%) and optionally inert solvent. The methine, methylene or methyl groups in the alpha -position to an ether oxygen atom in aliphatic or alicyclic mono- or di-ethers (I) are electrochemically methoxylated to give compounds (II) in which at least one hydrogen atom in the group is substituted with methoxy. The process is carried out in a cell with a solid electrolyte consisting of cation exchange membrane(s) in direct contact with a cathode and anode, using as electrolysis liquid an organic solution with essentially no conductive electrolytes, containing: (a) 10-90 wt.% methanol; (b) 1-50 wt.% compounds selected from ethers (I) and (II) (the content of (I) being at least 1 mol.%); and (c) 0-30 wt.% inert solvent.
