    Abstract: A process for the manufacture of paper having a high dry strength and a low wet strength, by treating the surface of the paper with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal salt of a polymer of (a) from 91 to 100% by weight of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid and (b) from 0 to 9% by weight of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide, methacrylamide, vinyl acetate, maleic anhydride, diisobutylene, an ester of acrylic acid and/or an ester of methacrylic acid, which has a viscosity of from 5 to 100 mPas in 2% strength aqueous solution at 20 DEG C., and drying the impregnated paper. The polymer is generally employed in an amount of from 1 to 4% by weight, based on dry paper, and increases the dry strength of the paper without substantially increasing the wet strength.

    Abstract: Polypropylene of high isotactic content, or copolymers of propylene with ethylene, butene-1, or 4-methyl pentene-1, in the form of finely granular dry products are obtained by polymerizing propylene alone, or admixed with one of the above monomers, in the presence of finely granulated propylene polymers, a Ziegler-type catalyst, and an ether or amine selected from polyfunctional ethers, amines, aminoethers, and/or amino-ketones, and, if desired, an inert diluent in such an amount that the desired final product is obtained. During the reaction the mixture is moved mechanically. The polymerization may also be effected in the presence of regulators such as zinc diethyl or zinc dipropyl, or hydrogen. Specified polyfunctional compounds are N-methyl-dipropylene-triamine, N,N1 - tetramethyl ­ ethylene-diamine, piperazine, hexamethylenetetramine, N - (3 - aminopropyl) - pyrrolidone, benzidine, N,N1 - tetramethylbenzidene, 3 - aminopyrimidine, pyrazine, diethylene-, and triethylene-, and propylene-, and butylene-glycol diethyl ether, diethylene glycol ethyl-butyl ether, 1,2-dimethoxybenzene, 1,4 - diethoxybenzene, oxazole, 4 - ethoxy - pyridine, 3 - methoxypropylamine, ethylene and diethylene glycol ethylaminopropyl ether, beta-phenoxyethylaniline, 4 - ethoxyethylaniline, 3 - methoxypropylamine, 3 - butoxypropylamine, 1 - aminopentanone - (4), 1 - diethylaminopentanone - (4), 1 - cyclohexylaminohexanone - (5), p - aminobenzophenone, 1 - dibenzylaminopentanone-(4), and 3-acetyl-pyridine. The Specification mentions many Ziegler-type catalyst. The catalyst exemplified is titanium trichloride and triethylaluminium. The catalyst residues are removed from the polymers by conventional techniques, e.g. treatment with aqueous-alcoholic hydrochloric acid.
