Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain isocyanate showing light color that is useful for production of polyurethane by reaction of phosgene with a specifically treated amine. SOLUTION: An amine as a raw material is treated with an inorganic solid substance that has the Lewis acid and/or Broensted acid centers (points) and the treated amine is allowed to react with phosgene to produce an isocyanate showing light color. This inorganic solid substance is, for example, an artificially modified natural or synthetic oxide and/or silicate salt, particularly aluminum silicate is preferred. The amine is preferably diphenylmethyldiamine and its higher homologues. The amine is preferably treated at 10-50 deg.C under 0.1-10 bar.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject solution which does not contain a noticable amount of coloration components at all and contain a relatively low amount of hydrolyzable chlorine by directly treating them with hydrogen at a relatively low temperature and pressure without additive temperature treatment and stress. SOLUTION: A solution containing at least one kind of isocyanate is phosgenated then treated with hydrogen before the perfect removal of the solvent. The treatment with hydrogen is carried out under the pressure of 0.5×10 -2.8×10 Pa at 70-150 deg.C in the phosgenation reagent. In a preferred embodiment, at least one of the isocyanate is an isocyanate in the group of diphenylmethane diisocyanates.

Abstract: High mol. wt. polyphenylene ethers (PPO) are prepd. from monohydric phenols with alkyl substits. in both o-positions, opt. in the m-position but not in the p-position, by (i) oxidative coupling with O2 at 10-50 deg. C in the presence of a copper salt/organic amine complex catalyst, in a 1:1-20:1 pts. wt. ratio with an organic solvent, based on monomeric phenol, and opt. with an activator (ii) stopping the reaction (iii) removing the catalyst with chelating- and salt-forming agents (iv) stabilising the PPO by reaction of the terminal -OH gps. with epoxides of formula (I). In (I), R1, R2 = same or different, opt. contg. a further epoxide gp., alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, aryloxy, alkyloxy, carboxyalkyl, 3-20C alkyl substd. amine or R1 = H; R2 = one of the above gps. or R1 and R2 form part of a cycloalkyl ring. Pref. R1 = phenoxy or di-n-butylamine and R2 = H. Specifically claimed cpds. are:- N-glycidyl-N-methyl aniline; glycidyl benzoate; phenyl glycidyl ether; cyclohexyl epoxide; Bisphenol-A-digylycidyl ether or butane-1,4-diglycidyl ether.
