    Abstract: Cast films of polyvinyl chloride, or copolymers containing a major proportion thereof, are drawn from the casting support while still containing solvent and after-dried at 150 DEG -300 DEG C., while held only at the sides, to produce a practically solvent-free film. As shown, the sides of the film may be applied to two endless spiked bands or clamp chains c (Fig. 1), by pressure rollers b, and dried in the heated chamber d. Alternatively (Fig. 2), the sides of the film may be applied by deflecting rollers b1 to two driving discs a1, on which the film is held by an endless wire cable or chain c1, and the film subsequently dried in chamber d1. Conventional heating means are used. By leading the spiked bands or clamp chains apart or by canting the discs a1, the film may be stretched transversely during drying. Films so made have a high gloss and are suitable for packaging. Examples describe the preparation of films from solutions in tetrahydrofurane, and in acetone-toluene mixtures.

[Also in Division H1] A binder for securing ferromagnetic particles to a substrate (see Division H1) comprises a mixture of (I) 60 to 99% by weight of a copolyamide of (a) 20 to 60% by weight of at least one lactam having more than six ring members and (b) 80 to 40% by weight of a mixture of at least one dicarboxylic acid having 6 to 20 carbon atoms, the latter mixture having at least one aliphatic dicarboxylic acid or diamine of 6 to 20 carbon atoms and represented by the formula in which Z denotes -CH 2 NH 2 or -COOH, R is an alkyl radical having at least 2 carbon atoms, R 2 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical having at least 2 carbon atoms and x and y each denote an integer from 1 to 5, and/or p,p 1 - diamino dicyclohexyl methane, the copolyamide being soluble in an organic solvent, and ((II) 40 to 1% by weight of a reaction product of formaldehyde and an aromatic compound having a phenolic hydroxy group and suitable for the formation of a phenolic resin. Numerous suitable lactams or corresponding amino acids are mentioned. Lists are given of compounds of the above general formula and of other C 6-20 dicarboxylic acids and diamines which may contain aliphatic or aromatic ring systems. The phenoplasts may be derived from phenol, cresols or naphthols and may be modified by conventional additives; in examples, the phenoplast comprises a polyester of 1 mole of trimethylol propane and 0.8 mole of adipic acid as modifier. Various solvents and optional additives are mentioned.

    Abstract: A cassette arrangement for a recording medium in strip or tape form, particularly a magnetic tape, for use with a recording and/or playback apparatus having drive means and scanning means, comprising two separate components, viz. an approximately rectangular cassette housing and a protective reel-holder, at least said housing being of a construction permitting opening and closing thereof. The cassette housing has openings for admitting the drive means and scanning means and, in one of the openings which is located adjacent the front of the housing, guide means for the recording medium, and also having means for receiving, when the housing is open, said reel-holder in a predetermined position. The reel-holder accommodates the hub or hubs on which the recording medium is wound to form a reel or reels, in a location or locations such as to permit, in cooperation with the receiving means, introduction of the reel(s) into the open cassette housing in the correct position for operation.
