Abstract: Thermostable bismuth vanadate/molybdate pigments are prepared by precipitating onto a pigment, obtained by calcination, of the formula Bi VO4.Bi2Mo O6 where n is 0.2-2.5, in aqueous suspension at 70 DEG -100 DEG C. within the pH range from 4 to 9.5 a first SiO2-containing layer using an alkali metal silicate solution of a magnesium hexafluorosilicate solution, maintaining the suspension at 70 DEG -100 DEG C. for not less than 1 hour, producing a thick coating on the precoated pigment by adding further alkali metal silicate solution, magnesium hexafluorosilicate solution or a mixture of the two within the pH range from 4 to 9.5, and finally depositing wax on the SiO2-containing layer by means of a waxing emulsion/dispersion, the products showing, compared with the starting pigment, an appreciably improved thermal stability in plastics.

Abstract: Bi vanadate pigments or pigments contg. Bi vanadate are coated with hardly soluble inorganic Fe cpds. (I). Pref. (I) are used in amts. of 0.001-2.0, pref. 0.05-0.5 wt.% w.r.t. the pigment. The pigments are produced by sepg. them from a suspension in an aq. Fe salt soln. and drying. The Fe salt is Fe2(SO4)3, Fe(NO3)3 or FeCl3. USE/ADVANTAGE - For pigmenting paints, printing inks and plastics. The (I) coating greatly reduced the photochromic effect. In an example, a suspension of 80 g pigment with the compsn. BiVO4.0.75 Bi2MoO6 and 120 g water was ball milled for 60 min. at 1200 rpm (A) without additive or with addn. of (B) 11.4 g Fe(NO3)3.9H2O or 6.8 g Fe2(SO4)3 in dissolved form. The suspension was filtered, washed and dried, giving a pigment contg. (A) 0.003, (B) 0.05, (C) 0.02 wt.% Fe. Paint contg. 20 g pigment in 80 g alkyl-melamine resin was sprayed onto sheet metal and half the sheet was exposed to a 1000 W lamp, 50 cm away, for 1 h. The difference in colour between the exposed and unexposed areas was (A) 2.2, (B) 1.1, (C) 0.7 immediately after exposure and (A) 1.0, (B) 0.2, (C) 0.1, 24 h after exposure.

Abstract: The invention relates to basic chromium aluminum sulfates which are soluble in cold water and are of the general formula CrxAl2-x(OH)2y. (SO4)3-y.n H2O where x is from 0.1 to 1.9, y is from 0.01 to 2 and n is from 4 to 24, and a process for the preparation thereof. The process comprises reacting chromium (III)-containing waste sulfuric acid having a water content of 20-50% by weight with aluminum oxide and/or aluminum oxide hydroxide and/or aluminum hydroxide at a temperature of 100 DEG to 200 DEG C. The molten product is converted to droplet form and allowed to solidify in free fall.
