Disclosed is a continuous method for treating the surface of metal strips. In said method, a surface property-modifying layer having a maximum thickness of 3 µm is applied by means of a device comprising at least one Fourier transform IR spectrometer which faces a coated side of the strip, operates using reflection geometry, and records IR spectroscopic measurement data of the applied surface property-modifying layer while the metal strip advances in order to characterize the surface.

The invention relates to a method for protecting the surfaces of copper or copper alloys from corrosion. According to said method, the metallic surface is brought into contact with an aqueous medium which contains, as a corrosion inhibitor, a quaternary polymer comprising ammonium groups and urea groups, thiourea groups and/or iminourea groups in a numerical ratio of between 1.5 : 1 and 2.5 : 1.

A method of manufacturing an automatic dishwashing detergent product, said product being provided as a discrete dosage unit and comprising a continuous, non-aqueous gel phase, comprises manufacturing the gel phase by a method comprising free radical polymerisation of monomer(s) in a non-aqueous reaction mixture to form a polymeric builder. The reaction mixture comprises: at least one non-ionic surfactant which is an optionally end-capped alcohol alkoxylate; and one or more monomers comprising acrylic acid, and optionally one or more further α,β-ethylenically unsaturated acids, wherein no more than 0.1 wt % of the total amount of the monomer(s) are crosslinking monomer(s). An automatic dishwashing detergent product provided as a discrete dosage unit, may comprise a continuous, non-aqueous gel phase comprising at least 10 wt % non-ionic surfactant and at least 20 wt % polymeric builder. The gel phase may be provided in a water soluble container.

The invention relates to a carboxylate ester of polysaccharide characterised in that it possesses ester bonds with trimellitic anhydride and is soluble in water. The polysaccharide is esterified with trimellitic anhydride and the degree of substitution of the polysaccharide lies in the range of from 0.5 to 3. The invention further relates to methods for the manufacture of these polysaccharides esters in organic solvents, in water or in an extruder or a kneader and to their use in fabric and home care formulations.
