A method of preparing a 2-(nitrophenyl) alkyl halide comprises halogenating a 2-(nitrophenyl) alkanol with a halogenation agent. Specified halogenation agents include thionyl chlorides, phosphorus tri- and pentachloride, cone. hydrochloric acid, hydriodic acid and phosphorus tribromide or triiodide. Examples describe the preparation of 2-(o-nitrophenyl) ethyl chloride using thionyl chloride or concentrated hydrochloric acid, and of 2-(o-nitrophenyl) ethyl bromide using hydrobromic acid.
