Abstract:
METHOD OF IMPROVING THE ADHESION OF VULCANIZED RUBBER COMPOSITIONS TO METALS COMPRISING ADMIXING (1) ACTIVE REENFORCING EXTREMELY FINELY DIVIDED SILICAS AND/OR ALUMINUM SILICATE AND/OR CALCIUM SILICATED OR CALCIUM CARBONATE, IF DESIRED, BLENDED WITH CARBON BLACK, AND (2) COMPONENTS CAPABLE OF RESIN FORMATION WITH THE RUBBER COMPOSITION BEFORE IT IS VULCANIZED ON THE METAL. THE QUANTITY OF THE SILICAS OR SILICATES OR CALCIUM CARBONATE ALONE OR BLENDED WITH CARBON BLACK ADMIXED WITH THE RUBBER COMPOSITION IS 5 TO 100, PREFERABLY, 10 TO 50 PARTS BY WEIGHT PER 100 PARTS BY WEIGHT OF RUBBER. A FURTHER IMPROVEMENT IN THE BOND OBTAINED CAN BE ACHIEVED BY ADMIXTURE OF HEAVY METAL OXIDES WITH THE RUBBER COMPONENTS PRIOR TO THE VULCANIZATION.

[Also in Division C3] Rubber is bonded to a textile material by incorporating in the rubber a phenol or amine and an aldehyde which reacts with the phenol or amine on heating to form a resin, and from 10 to 100 parts by weight of active silica per 100 parts by weight of rubber, and vulcanising the rubber in contact with the textile. The composition may contain other fillers, such as carbon black, and heavy metal oxides, particularly lead oxide. The preferred reactants are resorcinol and formaldehyde (from hexamethylene tetramine). Suitable textiles are polyester, polyamide, and rayon and may be pretreated by a conventional solutioning process.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a silica-containing mixture for improving the adhesion to vulcanizable mixtures of natural or synthetic rubber to reinforcing fillers or underlayers of textile or metallic fabrics after the mixture has been vulcanized thereon, said mixture comprising (A) an active, synthetically produced silica or silicate having a specific surface area according to BET of approximately 50 to 500 sq m per gram and an average primary particle size ranging from approximately 5 to 100 nm or a mixture thereof and comprising at least(B) one component, which forms phenol resin or aminoplast or (C) an least an organosilane selected from a bis-alkoxy-silyl-alkyl-oligosulphide having the general formula (I) q - Alk - Sn - Alk - Z wherein Z represents the groupings and wherein R1 represents an alkyl group containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms or the phenyl radical and R2 represents an alkoxy group containing 1 to 8, a cycloalkoxy group containing 5 to 8 carbon atoms or a straight or branched alkyl-mercapto group containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms and wherein all the symbols R1 and R2 can have the same or a different meaning, -Alk- represents a divalent, straight or branched hydrocarbon radical containing 1 to 18 carbon atoms and n represents a number from 2 to 6, a silane containing mercapto groups and having the general formula (II) Z - Alk - SH wherein Z and Alk have the meaning specified above, or a silane having the general formula (III) Z - Alk - A, wherein Z and Alk have the meaning specified above and A represents the groupings N = C - S R - S RO - CS - S RS - CS - S R1 - CS - S -, wherein each of R and R1 represent a monovalent organic radical saturated or unsaturated, branched or unbranched, acyclic, cyclic, heterocyclic or heteroaromatic rradical and containing 1 to 15 carbon atoms and 1 to 5 hetero atoms from the group of nitrogen, oxygen and sulphur or both (B) and (C).
