Abstract: METHOD OF DIRECTLY DETERMINING THE MAGNETOSTRICTION CONSTANT AND DEVICE FOR CARRYING OUT SAID METHOD The invention provides method and apparatus for determining and measuring the magnetostriction constant of magnetic thin film materials in which said material is applied on a substrate and the thus formed sample clamped at one end being deflected under the influence of a magnetic field through utilizing the respective magnetostriction effect, and the magnetostriction constant being measured via the deflection representing a measure for the magnetostriction constant characterized in that the sample is subjected to a magnetic AC field, wherein the magnetic AC field is frequency adjustable, and the magnetic AC field is adjusted with respect to frequency in such a manner that the sample can be set to vibrate in resonance, and whereupon the vibration amplitude (a, ares) of the sample which is a measure for the magnetostriction constant is determined opto-electrically. .

Abstract: Multi-layer magnetic thin-film disks comprising substrates with aluminum and a synthetic resin layer underneath the matallic magnetic layer are subject to the formation of pin holes in the synthetic resin layer, which pin holes are caused by galvano corrosion of the aluminum of the substrate. The pin holes are passivated by aluminum oxide which is advantageously effected by anodically oxidizing the aluminum of the substrate in an electrolytic bath, the electric voltage of the bath being well below the normal passivation voltage for aluminum. Abstract: ARRANGEMENT FOR DETERMINING CHARACTERISTICS OF MAGNETIC PARTICLE DISPERSIONS For determining characteristics of coating compositions including magnetic particles, the coating composition is subjected to an alternating magnetic field of selectively variable frequency. The field induced by the coating composition after energization is recorded, and thus the susceptibility of the coating composition is measured. Depending on the selected frequencies, conclusions can be made regarding the degree of dispersion, particle density, and viscosity of the coating composition. The frequency is varied between 1 and 100 cups, and the field intensity of the energizing field should be lower than about 10 Oersted. The coating composition may be static or flowing in a container pipe or conduit which is surrounded by field coils and a measuring coil.

Abstract: METHOD OF FORMING VIADUCTS IN SEMICONDUCTOR MATERIAL This method of forming viaducts or "through-holes" in semiconductor material for transistor and integrated circuit fabrication and especially for ink jet printing systems forms viaducts of uniform diameter without critical registration of masks. A seed layer of Cr-Au is sputtered onto a silicondioxide substrate. The viaducts or holes to be made are imaged by a photoresist process with a 5 .mu., thick photoresist on this seed layer. A 4 .mu. thick gold layer is now applied on the seed layer by a plating process. After the dissolution of the photoresist this layer contains the hole pattern with the holes having the required diameter. In order to make a through-hole, the substrate has to be etched. For that purpose, the bare substrate surface is covered with photoresist and exposed from the back through gold holes; and subsequently developed. Problems owing to light diffraction at the edges of the gold with respect to the great distance of the gold mask photoresist layer are not anticipated here because of the large holes and the high tolerances in this process step. Prior to etching the substrate, the gold layer with the hole pattern is covered by photoresist so that the substrate etching can take place from one side only. Now the substrate is etched until all of the gold holes are free. In that process, the extent of the substrate sub-etching is of small importance as the viaduct or hole diameter is defined by the gold mask. The photoresist is removed and the exposed substrate surfaces are protected against chemical reactions with the ink by a vapor-deposition of a protective layer.

Abstract: METHODS AND ARRANGEMENTS FOR CHARACTERIZING MAGNETIC COATING COMPOSITIONS AS WELL AS IMPROVING MAGNETIC PARTICLE DISPERSIONS A method and an arrangement is provided for characterizing magnetic coating compositions that contain magnetic particles dispersed in a solvent resin matrix. The probe material is subjected to an alternating magnetic field and vertically thereto to a constant magnetic field of appropriate field strength and duration. Via a measuring coil the induced signal in the probe material is monitored and different characteristics, preferably the degree of dispersion, are measured by measuring the magnetic susceptibility of the coating material. By applying a constant magnetic field the degree of dispersion can be changed at least for a certain time. The method and arrangement of the present invention can be incorporated in an in-line system into a coating apparatus to monitor the magnetic characteristica of the coating material as well as to improve and maintain such improved characteristics.

Abstract: MAGNETIC RECORD CARRIER AND METHOD OF MAKING IT The magnetic record carrier consists of a substrate and a magnetic coating which comprises a binder and substantially non-aggregated iron particles. The iron particles can have a coating of SiO2, and can be available either as a thin layer covered with the binder, or homogeneously dispersed in the binder. For making the magnetic record carrier, coated or uncoated iron oxide particles are applied onto the substrate and subsequently reduced in a hydrogen-containing atmosphere at temperatures between 220 and 350.degree.C. In the production where the iron particles are distributed in the binder, reduction takes place after a dispersion containing the binder, the iron oxide particles and a solvent has been spun onto the substrate and cured. In the production where the iron oxide particles form a thin layer, reduction is effected after the coated iron oxide particles have been applied onto the substrate as a mono-layer. It is only then that a dispersion containing the binder and a solvent is applied and cured.
