    Abstract: An ink jet printing apparatus has provision for both line printing and character-by-character printing. A directionally oriented grating and associated circuitry is provided to maintain a record of character and ink drop printing locations. Also, provision is made for over-shooting the printhead some distance past each character printed during an incremental mode and for stopping the printhead to enable better visibility of the character just printed. Upon printing of the next character, the printhead first moves to the left a sufficient distance to get past the character box to be printed and sweeps to the right with the overshoot and stopping as before.

The assembly is fabricated in such a way as to allow simple insertion into the printer or typewriter and the retention of the assembly in a proper position within the typewriter by the engagement of hooks (50) appended to the paper deflector (42, 54) with a paper release bail. Movement of paper release bail (14, 18) will compress a spring (28) which engages roll axle supports (20) and fixed rail (10), allowing the paper deflector (42, 54) and feed rolls (38) to with withdrawn from the periphery of the platen. The device allows automated assembly of the paper feed roll assembly into a machine and, in addition, provides complete self-alignment capability for the rolls (38) with respect to the periphery of the platen.

During incremental printing, as well as the first character in a line or group of characters, provision is made for re-bounding the printhead back into the box of the character just printed, that is, prior to the next character box to be printed to insure that when the printhead starts up again for the next character that all drop components for that character, including any located in the immediate vicinity of the character boundary, are properly placed during printing.

In a typewriter in which a single element type head 1 is pivoted for impression by a cam 11 or 15 acting on a follower 17, the cam selected governs the throw of ink ribbon lift vibrator arms 41, 43. For printing in black, cam 11 is selected and on rotation of a shaft 7, to which a sleeve bearing the cams is keyed, the head 1 is pivoted about an axis 21 for impression, and a cam 37 rotates to lift a foot 47a of a slotted flange 47. A pin 55 located in the slot of the flange 47 engages a ribbon lift arm 41 and as the flange is lifted and pivoted about a pivot 49, the ribbon lift arms are lifted to position the upper, black, half of the ribbon between the head 1 and the platen 3. For printing in red, the follower 17 may be moved automatically, by electromagnetically displacing a pulley 31 around which passes a tape 27 connected to the follower, into engagement with cam 15. During such movement, a camming member 23 is also moved, a camming surface thereon effecting counterclockwise rotation of a rod 61 and thereby movement of the pin 55 away from the pivot 49 through links 51, 57. When the shaft is then rotated, the ribbon lift arms 41 are lifted further by the cam 37 to bring the lower, red half of the ribbon into operative position. The cams 11, 15 may have different conformations to apply different impression forces to the type head 1. Further cams may be provided, such as a nolift cam 13, and further cams to vary the impression force. Printing in red can be selected manually by positioning a rod 59 through a detent arrangement 63 to prevent the pin 55 moving to the black printing position.
