Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a lactam, by which the corresponding lactam can be produced from a cycloalkane, a cycloalkanol or a cycloalkanote in one step. SOLUTION: This method for producing the lactam, comprising reacting at least one compound selected from the cycloalkane, the cycloalkanol or the cycloalkanone with ammonia and oxygen in the presence of an imide compound catalyst having an N-hydroxy(or N-oxo)cyclic imide skeleton to obtain the corresponding lactam. The imide compound catalyst includes a compound represented by formula (1) (R1 and R2 are each H, a halogen atom, an alkyl, an aryl, a cycloalkyl, or the like, or R1 R2 may be bound to each other to form a double bond, or an aromatic or non-aromatic ring; X is O or HO).

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for modifying a polymer of high general-purpose properties wherein a polar group can be readily introduced into a polymer, particularly, a hydrophobic polymer. SOLUTION: A polymer is treated with an oxygen atom-containing gas, such as oxygen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, sulfur oxide or the like, in the presence of an imide compound represented by the formula, such as an N-hydroxyphthalimide or the like, (wherein R1 and R2 may be the same or different and independently represent a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom, an alkyl group, an aryl group, a cycloalkyl group, an alkoxycarbonyl group or an acyl group provided that R1 and R2 may join together to form a double bond, or an aromatic or non-aromatic ring; and X represents an oxygen atom or a hydroxyl group). The oxygen atom-containing gas should preferably be made of at least one member selected from oxygen, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide.

SOLUTION: A sublimable polycyclic hydrocarbon (e.g. a bridged cyclic hydrocarbon having a methylidyne group, especially an adamantane) is oxidized in the presence of an oxidizing catalyst consisting of an imide compound expressed by the formula [R and R are each H, a halogen, an alkyl, etc., and they may be bonded to each other to form a double bond or a ring; X is oxygen or hydroxyl; (n)=1-3] in a mixed solvent consisting of (A) a non- sublimable aromatic compound (e.g. a benzene derivative) and (B) at least one compound (e.g. an organic compound such as a 1-4C aliphatic hydrocarbon) selected from acidic compounds and non-aromatic nitrile compounds [the component A/the component B=(25/75) to (95/5) by weight] under contact with oxygen to produce a polycyclic hydrocarbon which has a hydroxyl or oxo group.

In the formula, R and R each expresses a substituent group such as hydrogen atom and a halogen atom and can form a double bond or an aromatic or non-aromatic 5 to 12 ring by coupling each other. X expresses O or OH and n=1-3.
