    Abstract: A method and wireless communication system for providing channel assignment information used to support an uplink (UL) channel and a downlink (DL) channel. The system includes at least one Node-B and at least one wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU). The WTRU communicates with the Node-B via a common control channel, the UL channel and the DL channel. The WTRU receives a message from the Node-B via the common control channel. The message includes an indication of whether the message is intended for assigning radio resources to the UL channel or the DL channel. The WTRU determines whether the message is intended for the WTRU and, if so, the WTRU determines whether the message is for assigning radio resources to the UL channel or the DL channel. The WTRU takes an appropriate action based on whether the message is for assigning radio resources to the UL channel or the DL channel.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for compensating for phase noise of symbols spread with a long spreading code are disclosed. To compensate for the phase noise, a phase error estimate is generated from despread symbols with a short spreading code. A phase correcting phasor is applied to chip rate data before despreading the data with a long spreading code. A signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) on a common pilot channel (CPICH) may be calculated by spreading the data with a parent spreading code in an orthogonal variable spreading factor (OVSF) code tree and by combining symbols. Alternatively, a magnitude of the symbols may be used in estimating the SIR. The SIR of a channel using a short spreading code and an SIR of a channel using a long spreading code are measured. The SIR of the channel with the long spreading code may be compensated in accordance with a difference between degradation of the SIRs.

    Abstract: A channel estimation apparatus and method is provided for a wireless communication signal received from at least one relatively mobile wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU). Predetermined filter coefficients having unique index values are stored in a memory device. An index generator matches estimation values of the mobile unit speed and SNR to a particular filter coefficient, and selects a corresponding index value, whereby the memory performs a look up function according to the index value and outputs a filter coefficient vector. The channel estimation of the wireless communication signal is taken from the output of the filter. Alternatively, a set of parallel filters which run continuously are used to produce several channel estimates, from which the final estimate is selected based on the associated lowest mean square error or highest SNR.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for estimating attributes of a received signal that includes a plurality of transmitted signals are provided. The amplitude of the received signal is estimated by performing a method of demodulation based on known signal information. The amplitude of an M-ary quadrature amplitude modulated signal is estimated based upon known or ascertainable phase information regarding a plurality of transmitted symbols. The amplitude of a q-ary amplitude shift keyeing signal is estimated based upon known or ascertainable magnitude information regarding a plurality of transmitted symbols. Statistical information is also used for amplitude estimation.

    Abstract: A step-size estimator for controlling the step-size of an adaptive equalizer incorporated in a transceiver, (e.g., a wireless transmit/receive unit (WTRU)). The step-size estimator updates at least one adaptive equalizer tap used by the adaptive equalizer based on an apparent speed of a channel established between the transceiver and another transceiver. The step-size estimator includes a speed estimator, a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) averager and a step-size mapping unit. The speed estimator is used to estimate the apparent speed of the channel, (i.e., the observed and/or measured rate of change of the channel impulse response). The SNR averager generates a common pilot channel (CPICH) SNR estimate. The step-size mapping unit uses the speed estimate and the CPICH SNR estimate to generate a step-size parameter, µ, and a filter taps leakage factor parameter, ±, used by the adaptive equalizer to update the filter tap coefficient.

    Abstract: A method and apparatus for radio resources control in a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication system are disclosed. Radio resources are controlled by producing and applying a respective adaptive modulation and coding to each data stream. Applying a respective transmit power level to that data stream and mapping that data stream to a plurality of antennas. Each of the plurality of data streams are transmitted over different subcarriers, has a different adaptive modulation and coding (AM&C) and a different transmit power than others of the plurality of data streams.
