Abstract: A portable radiotelephone with a keypad, alphanumeric character display, and hands free function is disclosed. A movable flip element of the housing covers a keypad and other control buttons when in a closed, on-hook, position and activates the illumination of the keypad, enables the display, and enables the hands free function when in an open, off-hook, position. The duration of keypad illumination and display activation are timed to reduce battery drain and the hands free function may be deactivated with a hookswitch flash.

Abstract: A portable radiotelephone (200) adjusts its transmit power responsive to the position of a movable antenna (213). The antenna (213) is movable between a retracted (313) and an extended position (314). The portable radiotelephone (200) transmits at low power when the antenna (213) is retracted and at high power when the antenna (213) is extended. Additionally, the portable radiotelephone (200) can notify a remote base station of the change in transmit power at any time during transmission.

Abstract: A portable radiotelephone with an integral voice recognition circuit is disclosed. Control of the voice recognition circuit is achieved with a foldable housing element (104) which, in a closed position, covers an external keypad (110) and control buttons. When the foldable housing element (104) is in an open position, the portable radiotelephone is placed in an off-hook condition, the voioe recognition circuit (432) is activated, and the acoustic transducers (320, 424) are coupled to the voice recognition circuit (432). When the foldable element (104) is in a closed position, the portable radiotelephone is placed in an on-hook condition, the voice recognition circuit (432) is deactivated, and the electroacoustic transducers (320, 424) are coupled to the radiotelephone. A rapid closing and opening of the foldable element (104) results in the voice recognition circuit (432) being deactivated while the portable radiotelephone remains in the off-hook condition.

Abstract: The portable communication device includes a transmitter (301) for sending out radio telephone signals. It also includes a receiver (301) for receiving radio telephone signals. A processor (303) controls the communication device. A memory (305) stores data. The portable device also has an elongate housing. The housing includes a first housing part (102) adapted to receive the portable communication device circuitry. A second housing part (104) surrounds the first part (102) and is rotatable relative to the first part (102), so as to select a predetermined function stored in the memory. The second housing part (104) is arranged to slide along a longitudinal axis which extends through the device housing so as to initiate the selected function.

Abstract: Both paging and cellular radiotelephone functions can be combined in a small, lightweight, single device by sharing most circuitry. The apparatus can receive paging signals simultaneously with radiotelephone signals because of dual receivers (105 and 110). When the paged party receives a page, an alert tone, a vibration, a visual indication, or a voice message is used to alert the party. Information extracted from the paging signal can be stored in memory (101) for later use. The paged party can select among messages stored in memory. If a message contains a telephone number, the paged party can call that number using the radiotelephone function at the touch of a button. The apparatus's keypad (102) can be used to program the paging function receiving frequency, identification code and type of paging system.
