    Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the yield of products due to misalignment or, etc., and obtain precise, uniform image displays and optical signals by integrally forming a modulating electrode and an electron emission element on a board and differentiating the film thickness of an insulation layer under an electron emission section from that in other areas. CONSTITUTION:A resist is formed on an insulating board 1. After Ti as under- coating material and Ni as modulating electrode material evaporated all over, a modulating electrode pattern 2 is formed. A resist pattern is formed to make a modulating electrode layer thin in part. Ni at the lower part of electron emission elements 3, 4 is given about 4000Angstrom etching. The resist is peeled to obtain the desired modulating electrode pattern 2. SiO2 for an insulation layer 5 is given mask-deposition as necessary. After pre-protecting the area where SiO2 is not laminated, the surface of SiO2 is made flat using ion mealing. An element electrode pattern 3 of SCE is formed above the electrode 2. Cr is evaporated all over to remove only Cr near the electron emission section 4. Organic palladium as emission material is formed all over. Patterning Cr is etched out.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To make the precise positioning of constituent members unnecessary, by putting in layers electron discharge elements on a conductive base through an insulation body, and also providing voltage impressing means which are separate from and independent of the above elements and the above base. CONSTITUTION:An insulation film 2 is formed on the surface of a conductive base 1, and wiring electrodes 3a, 3b consisting of conductive films are formed on it. Element electrodes 4 having electrode narrow gaps are connected to the wiring electrodes, and electron discharge materials are arranged at the gap portions, and electron discharge portions are formed. As a result, the base 1 itself becomes a modulating electrode, so the precise positioning of constituent members is made unnecessary, and a line electron source of a long length can be formed with a simple process.

CONSTITUTION:A timing control circuit 103 changes the contents of output of a line memory 105 every one line synchronously with the serial picture data to be inputted into a shift register 104. On the other hand, aforesaid control circuit generates control signals to the switching element array 102 to drive in sequence, however generating spike--shaped impression voltage due to characteristic diversity of the switching elements S1 to Sm+1. There, by inputting cut-off timing signals to a gate array 106 ranging at least 100 n s, a modulation grid cuts-off needless electron beams by a modulation grid. Thereby, lowering of brightness contrast and crosstalk can perfectly be removed.

    Abstract: PURPOSE:To allow high integration by providing a control electrode on an electron emitting source via an insulating layer and providing a focusing electrode on this electrode via an insulating layer. CONSTITUTION:An insulating layer 1b and a metal layer 1c are partially laminated on a substrate electrode 1a to form an electron emitting element. The layer 1c is separated from the other region by an insulating region 1d. A control electrode 3 is provided on the region 1d via an insulating layer 2, and a focusing electrode 5 is provided on the electrode 3 via an insulating layer 4. According to this constitution, the ON-OFF of the electrons emitted from the layer 1c is controlled by the electrode 3. In addition, the ON-OFF of the electrons emitted from the layer 1c is controlled by the electrode 5. Accordingly, the electrode 3 and electrode 5 can be integrally manufactured on the same substrate, and high integration is allowed.
